Got an email from humax about the launch of the Humax freeview HD dvb-t2 + pvr.
from.
Graham North
Commercial Director
Humax Electronics Co. Ltd.

At the end of the email he wrote.

I will be back to you shortly with news of software updates for the Freesat models, but that's all for now.
Oh no! This means the forum will get filled with threads titled'<insert month> and still no firmware update' until a new firmware release surfaces

I dont think there will be, most of the bugs are fixed and its very reliable.

In fact I can only find 1 easily repeatable bug now.

I suspect it is more that you have learnt to live with and work-around the issues so you don't really notice them now or perhaps some were never issues for you.
My list is here and I would dearly love a firmware update to resolve those.
Others have commented that their main issue is the power cut problem - but that is not a significant one for me.

I forgot about the chase view jumping back to live programming once the program has ended.

Thats a huge bug that needs to be fixed.

The other one for me is do a channel scan, then go to delete loads of channels. If you press the button too quickly, the box reboots every time.

Im not affecting by anything else and I was a big critic of the box before the last update.

Id like other things like being able to edit recordings and being able to put the HD channels into their SD EPG slot but thats about it.

If Humax introduced an option to populate Channels 01-99 on the EPG with a "favourites" list so you could have whatever channels you liked (Freesat and non-Freesat) in whatever order you liked (with EPG info for those on Freesat) I would go out and buy a Foxsat right now.

The only downside to the Humax box I currently use is that you can't record from it and it only gets Now & Next info. The Freesat software limits you from having channels named as you would like and in an order that you prefer, which I understand may be due to the rigidity of the Freesat spec given by the BBC/ITV, but it's an annoyance for me and many other users out there. I can do it on a Freeview box, manufacturer permitting, so why not on a Freesat box, manufacturer permitting?

Call me crazy, but in the unlikely event of me ever watching or recording something on ITV, I don't want to waste HDD space with HD programming without being asked first. So far I've not had the misfortune to find myself watching itv at all, but accidents may happen from time to time.

If you search hard enough there is a publicly accessible Humax site with Beta Firmware labelled as "Foxsat-HDR Test software" with a date of 30th August 2010.

I've downloaded it but aren't brave enough to try it.

P.S. The site also conatins beta firmware for the Freeview HD/HDR FOX T2 models as well.

I've downloaded it but I am scared when i click on the version number it links to a google page that tells me i have insufficient access, i presume thats the same for everyone else?

If i had more of a clue as to the changes i would be better informed as to whether i should risk it, as obviously you have no comeback if it dletes your schedule or even all your recordings.

Im also a bit confused, as there is no info and seemingly no reporting tool to let humax know of any issues found.....

Why would anyone install an unannounced, unsupported, upgrade when they don't even know what it's supposed to change?

Yes. Well, I suppose it's better than base jumping or tombstoning.

I notice that there is not a beta version of the loader, just a beta of the main code. If you compare the file size of the version 13 on the main site it is 7853KB the Beta is 8469KB and is marked as V3.

Well I took the plunge...no difference as I could see, apart form live pause seemed to hold when the programme changed, so that may be a fix. but got a message on screen all the time saying 'Red key V 2.5.4 for develoment only' so had to go back to the original version.
It didn't reset any settings or erase my programmes from the HDD

One thing I did see on the Beta site is that some files are described as 'Test software', others 'Upgrade' and the remainder as 'Software version',

Did you try the power cut while in standby problem?

You're a brave man!

Thanks for taking the plunge on our behalf!

Too little information, think I'll give it a pass...

At least knowing that there is a beta version around means that it's almost definite now that we will be getting a released upgrade in the not too distant future.

Don't forget to select ITV and see if there is any mention of their player, please.

The origional email said "I will be back to you shortly with news of software updates for the Freesat models, but that's all for now." So I guess that means all Humax's freesat models?

I don't have the foxsat-hdr to test it but I understand that this testing firmware contains a number of 'under the hood' type updates to bring the box up to date. Mostly MHEG probably. There are a couple of changes that could go into the planned future software upgrade, but it depends on how the engineers progress and then all the testing that need to be done.
