I think the US version has aged really badly - it started off all about how great money was, it was all Trump saying look how fabulously wealthy I am, look how much gold I have in my dining room, you too could be like me! It was basically a competition to become a Master of the Universe, circa Gordon Gecko and the Bonfire of the Vanities. And it was quite good fun watching these people prostitute themselves on TV for even a glimmer of that kind of life.
Then it became all about the cult of Trump, with his hot girlfriends and daughter, his idiot sons, his damn buildings all over the place.
The celebrity version was okay, because it stripped out all the naked greed that the earlier shows displayed, and became more about the game. It also allowed them to sidestep the thorny issue of the economy tanking.
But this year, they just can't get the balance between the hard luck stories of the candidates, and the still prevalent (even in the theme song!) greedy theme. And Trump has become a caricature of himself - he just shouts everything, and nobody dare challenge him, and he still can't stop promoting himself.
This weeks task about his clothing line in Macy's was particularly irritating and self serving.
Compare that to the UK version, which was always a little less flash and a little more realistic, and was never really about making someone richer than God, but more about presenting them with an opportunity they could run with or not. And it goes from strength to strength as a result.
I think the US version needs to ditch Trump, as he is the one stinking up the joint if you ask me - him and his hideous off spring!
Wasn't there a Martha Stewart version at one stage - never saw it, but maybe that was more interesting (would be more interesting now that she is a convict as well!!)
Paul, just venting!
