I have seen a mains extension lead on mapplins web site that as well as having normal sockets it also has some USB sockets. Will the USB sockets have enough power to charge my iPad. I idid find this article but not any the wiser. I would not mind if it took longer to charge, my iPad, so long as it did.

Yep.

If I plug it in to my macbook with the standard connector>USB it will trickle a little bit of charge in to the pad.

When you plug it into your Mac, does your iPad say if it is charging. When I plug mine into my laptop, it says "not charging" , is this true or if i did leave it connected would it SLOWLY charge?

That's right - but it's a very slow charge. Far better and quicker to connect it to the supplied 10W charger.

Yep most of the power is going to charge the macbook so the ipad is only taking a little trickle from that so it's not enough for it to show it's actually charging but it does.

From what I understand, if you see the message 'not charging', then it really is not charging. That's because the screen is taking too much power. It will only start to trickle charge when it is in standby or off, but then of course you can't see the message.

A bit like whether the fridge light goes out when you shut the door. Does it

I just checked something tonight.

When the iPad is linked to the macbook and the macbook is on charge, the battery icon on the iPad shows the lightening symbol to show it's being charged. So it is indeed just on a trickle charge.
