I've just dug out the DVD 'Just Dusty' and watching it, I'm once again enchanted by her voice.

Has there ever been a more beautiful voice recorded - her songs are just amazing - even when they are lyrically questionable, that voice just shines through.

Is she the greatest singer that this country has produced?

as good as dusty is, i reckon annie lennox is this country's greatest singer.

unless you meant england as opposed to britain, in which case yes, i don't think there's anyone better than dusty.

I am a very big fan of Annie Lennox, but I don't think that she tops Dusty.

Annie is technically brilliant, and occasionally inspired, but I don't think that she brings the same emotion to her music - I feel that with Annie Lennox there's always a certain distance to her vocal.

Awww, I love this thread already!

I'm ashamed to say I only started listening to Dusty's music in 2007 (I was only 9 years old when she passed away, and I don't really recall hearing her music prior to that.)

I fell in love with her voice pretty quickly though. I bought her Greatest Hits in early 2008 and a DVD of her live last year. I could watch and listen to both all day. A beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice.

Give Me Time is actually my favourite song at the minute.

IMO yes.

There are obviously gr8 singers the UK has produced, but she has that something 'extra'.theres something unique in her singing, particularly in her high/low notes. especially on "in the land of make-believe". Oh, I think its time to put on Dusty In Memphis!

I love Give Me Time - but You Don't Have To Say You Love Me is my favourite - the key change at the end always makes my hairs stand on end! (Although, on a slightly morbid note, I Only Want To Be With You is the song I want played at my funeral)

I highly recommend the DVD 'Just Dusty', it's a great bio of Dusty with interviews with most of her inner circle.

The perfect album I think I'll be listening to this tonight in bed... Round, like a circle in a spiral...

Love that album, just beautiful Listening to Georgie Fame at the moment - what a hip young thing I am!

I reckon Dusty and Matt Monro are the UK's best singers (of their type). Annie Lennox is a good singer but most of her stuff is over produced, sucking the soul from it.

Love her voice and she sings every word like she means it.

I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten is a beautiful song and beautiful sung.

I cannot believe she is British - I always had it in my head that she was American until reading this thread

Love 'What Have I Done To Deserve This' when she teamed up with Pet Shop Boys.

I LOVE Dusty-she's our greatest female singer imo but shes never quite got the recognition I think she deserved. She never had a no.1 album and her only no.1 single was You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.

Maybe that will change when a film of her life is made-they been saying this will happen for a while now and Nicole Kidman is favourite to play her.

Dusty did some great covers in her time. Here are a few of my faves:

For me, she undoubtedly has the greatest female voice I've ever heard. Totally unique and effortless. A voice that can make you cry or inspire you in the same song.

Duffy reminded me a little of Dusty. I think a few critics picked up on it as well

I heard a lot of critics say that too, but couldn't understand it. For me, Duffy can't hold a candle to Dusty. There's a depth and soul in her voice that can't be replicated.

Dusty In Memphis is a must have in any music collection, as is the DVD of her BBC shows.

I'd also recommend the 4 disc ear-book set, 'Dusty' which has all the classics and some great rarities.

Dusty Springfield's voice is legendary. It's quite an honour when Aretha Franklin lists you in some of her idols.

Breakfast in Bed is my favourite Dusty track. Then 24 hours from Tulsa

Some Of Your Lovin' or a House Is Not A Home are my favourites but she could sing MacD's menu and I'd be glued.

This talk of a bio-pic hase been doing the rounds for the last decade. At one point Guy Richie and Madonna were eyeing it up. Thank god that came to nothing.

Vocally, I think Adele is closer than Duffy, though neither really hold a candle.

I think that's my favourite too. I also love the Northern Soul styled 'What's It Gonna Be?'.

I recently bought a great CD of all of her 60s singles A's & B's in original mono.

i never 'got' the love for annie lennox, imho she was nothing extraordinary... unlike dusty who surely is the greatest, most respected, and ground breaking female artist this country has ever produced. (kate bush being the most innovative..)

Not vocally. Her management tried to style her like Dusty and dropped Dusty's name in the press release. Sounds nothing like her. Duffy sounds like a goat in pain.

Wonderful thread, what memories Dusty evokes. Some of Your Loving my favourite, but didn't dislike any of her stuff.

a fantastic track... besides the obvious classic 'goin back' and the often overlooked, motown-esque 'little by little'.
