Why do so many albums have their release dates delayed?

Reading the Ciara thread regarding regarding her next album, it's always so frustrating when an artist you like has their album release delayed for whatever reason.

Is there a reason why even big name artists like Mariah Carey get plagued by delays when they have an album due out? It's really annoying when all you want is new music from someone you like only to be made to wait and wait and wait until you don't even care anymore.

And is it me or are delays with album releases something that's been happening more and more over the last few years?

i've been waiting for both jt and amy winehouse's 3rd album after they released their second ones in 2006.

I think they get pushed back due to lack of interests in the first and second single, so they go back to the studio and create more music.

jt's not making a third album right now, so doesn't count as a delay

Well that's ok because if Jt made a 3rd album and it was never released I'd be mighty sore!!

For most cases I'd assume the album is just not ready, or at least not ready in the way the record company want it to be.

Writing the songs is the biggest time hog because the initial ideas are the beginning of the album. If the writing is shit then everything else will be shit following that.

It may seem like it's happening more because we're more informed with resources from the internet keeping the fans updated but before the internet, I don't ever recall knowing a release date for an album months before hand. It was just a case of when a singer had a new single out in the charts, an album was to be expected shortly and then you didn't hear from them for about a year or two until the next album.

Avril Lavigne's and Evanescence's newies seem to be in the non-releasedate phase at the moment, but they say 'Summer 2010', then 'Fall 2010', then 'Christimas', then 'Early 2011'. It's ridiculous.

Recently Ciara, Kelly Rowland and Nicki Minaj's albums have all been delyed and pushed back. It does seem that lately everyone keeps doing this. I know they probably do it to make the album better and to finalise stuff but the problem with this is half the songs will probably already be leaked by the time it's ready. Then the albums don't feel as fresh as they would have done.
