I posted this on another forum earlier today so apologies to those tht have seen it already;
Mine was delivered at 10am today and I have now had a couple of hours of 'getting to know you'.
In summary, I'm very glad I took my Philips HDT8520 back for a refund a few weeks back! I'll write a few words about it but I'm no techno expert so its just as a standard user that I give my experience so far.
The Humax is a much larger and significantly heavier proposition than the rejected Philips. It has a quality look and feel to both the unit and the remote which I think reflects its price as a premium product.
Set up was easy and took about 10 mins. I've got it connected to the TV via an upgrade HDMI cable and through my 5.1 system via an optical cable. It is silent in operation. The picture quality in HD seems just as good as the Philips, I do think the Philips had the edge on PQ in standard def though. Having said that, the PQ in SD is just as good as the picture received via the upscaler on my Toshiba TV so I'm quite happy.
The EPG is a joy - it makes the Philips version look dated aside from the fact that the Hummy lets you keep sound and vision of the channel you are watching while in the guide via a small picture in the corner of the display. You can also selct a channel to watch direct from the guide. What luxury eh Philips users!? Also, the EPG is fully populated immediately - a big improvement from an old Hummy 9300 I had which took an age.
Sound - there are no issues with differing volumes between channels and joy of joys, when I was watching the BBC preview channel, there was 5.1 sound.
Recording - a simple prospect and playback and chaseplay all seems to work smoothly and perfectly.
Obviously its early days and with more in depth use there may be an issue or two but at this stage I can do nothing but sing the praises of the HDR T2 and say it was worth the wait.
Philips users - take it back and change it - you won't regret it. I can't see how Philips can get theirs to this standard when they eventually start releasing updates to put right their mess of a PVR.
Well done Humax!
