Hey,

Looks pretty impressive and really shows you what the iPhone is capable off - http://www.macrumors.com/2010/08/12/...es-per-second/

"The report notes that id will be releasing a minor "show off" title from the Rage franchise later this year, with a full version set to launch next year along with versions for other platforms."

Definitely looking forward to that one

Gormond.

I thought software engines were banned on the platform!

Hey if it is not banned Adobe could use it for Flash?
Now that would make it interesting because I fail to see the legal difference between a Flash engine and id Tech 5.

I believe the ban (created to neuter Adobe's converter, but affects many) forces you to use Objective C or C++ with Xcode.

If game engines are somehow covered by these obscure edicts, you can bet that Apple will just approve it anyway or modify the rules to allow it, if the company in question is someone they like.

A superb, well written, concise reply.

Would you like to try again? Perhaps make it relevant to the post you've quoted this time.

I'm not sure how discussing Apple's policies is trolling.

Must be a fanboy thing.

It looks very impressive. It's probably a nightmare on your battery though.

edit: This sort of game would be brilliant if it made use of the gyroscope

I believe the ban (created to ensure a superb experience and neuter Adobe's crappy converters of which users are not bothered) brilliantly allows you to use Objective C or C++ with Xcode.

It is both revolutionary and safe so unlike Flash Apple rightly approved it.
Corrected for you!

This is getting as bad as the mac vs windows vs *nix rubbish, get a phone, love your phone, and appreciate that others love theirs too. iPhone 4 is a fantastic piece of engineering, so also are top of the range Android/symbian/RIM phones. all have their strengths/All have their weak points. Just enjoy using the bloody things!

It is a little ridiculous that out of 13 posts, only two are on topic.

The video in the link looked pretty awesome actually. I'm impressed it can do 60fps, though the programmer seemed to kind of imply it would work just as well on a second-gen iPhone too, or did I misunderstand that? If so, it's quite a feat of programming.

By other platforms, I wonder if they're talking other mobile platforms? I hope so, I'd look forward to seeing whether the Android version could pull 60fps. I think most current Android phones are graphically inferior to the iPhone 4, but if programmed well I'm sure it could yield some good results.

New released phones will vary.

The Galaxy S and Wave are supposedly twice as fast(at least identical) but as said it will come down to software.
Here the OS4 has a possible advantage in a similar way that OS/X had a possible advantage.

Samsung no doubt have the edge over everyone in that they both fabricate and design.

No, it shows you what the engine is capable of on weak (in gaming terms) hardware, it'll be the same on other phones, it even runs on a 2G.

I doubt very much it will get 60FPS and the same graphic detail on the 2G, hence why they used the iPhone 4 to show it off. My old 3G couldn't even play Sonic without constantly dropping frames.

Either way I guess we will see later this year.

This was a demo of a game engine, not of the iPhone. Sonic is irrelevant because this engine works in a completely new way. The people were applauding because they'd got it to run on an iPhone, they weren't applauding the iPhone.

Whilst that performance on iPhone 4 is good. The real story here I think is this level of quality of games being able to run on the top-range mobile handsets.

Not so weak in handheld-gaming terms. The iPhone 3GS & 4 are more powerful than the DS & PSP, as are the Galaxy S & Desire, etc.

Your missing the point, they were showing what this engine can do on lesser hardware, they were not as the OP suggested showing how powerful the iPhone is.....

Looks pretty impressive and really shows you what the iPhone is capable of

I didn't say or suggest that....

I said it shows what it's capable of which is exactly what it does do. Exactly in the same way the crytek engine shows off what a modern computer is capable of.

What they need to do next for these phones is a nice addon so that you can play the games properly, so many really good games have been ruined because of poor controls. Touch screen games work well with some games but you can't beat a dpad and some buttons.

I would game a lot more on my iPhone if I could have a caddy that I could attach when needed. I like the look of the SE phone that has a slide out game controller.
