Hi,

does anyone know if it's possible to buy sim cards for foreign countries which you can obtain and activate before going abroad to avoid roaming charges.

I have an unlocked iPhone and we are looking at going to France for a week in the new year, but the unlock email from O2 I received said I needed to activate any new sim via iTunes which of course I won't have in a foreign country, so I'd need to get hold of the sim before I go.

Any suggestions?

I did think of going onto a French mobile operator website, but I don't have any French language ability.

I'm pretty sure that mine unlocked without putting a different SIM in it - the next time I connected to iTunes it just told me the unlock was done.

Otherwise, any other SIM will do it. Borrow one from a friend on a different network. Or get a PAYG one from someone else.

But it's a foreign one I was specifically asking about and I don't have any foreign friends. I could easily sort out a UK network sim.

As I understood your questions, you want to unlock your iPhone and make sure it's unlocked before you go abroad.

You don't need a foreign SIM to do that, you just need any SIM that isn't an O2 one.

Get your foreign SIM when you get to where you're going.

Yes, that's correct.

Just get a SIM from Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile or 3 - they should provide one free on their websites.

eBay is a good source for foreign SIMs - often, they come with credit already loaded on, so you can put it in your phone and be up and running as soon as you arrive in the foreign country, without having to search around for phone shops.

Thanks, I'll probably do that. My phone us already officially unlocked so just want a sum that'll work in France and ideally get it before going, but judging by the other thread on thus it doesn't sound easy.
