I really want this phone, but after my previous thread I found out it's US only and it's also been discontinued. Has anyone seen a phone available in the UK that looks like this? It basically has to be:

-A "bar" phone that opens up
-Hopefully orange (although the colours not that important)

Sorry but I'm no techie and I don't know much about mobile phones and for all I know there could be plenty of these on the market!

Thanks

Indeed.

Verizon has a CDMA2000 network, which isn't used in the UK.

the nokia n97 does not flip up but still has a slide out qwerty keyboard, although its apparently an incredibly frustrating phone to use.

They have two networks that support GSM, T Mobile and AT&T.

The problem the Americans have is that they were one of the first countries in the market and have been saddled with some pretty old tech.

Americans also get charged when they receive a Mobile call or text.

Weird or What?

CDMA2000 is no older than UMTS.

Not really.

This is very common outside of western Europe.

It's just like how most people in the UK don't realise free banking is uncommon in other countries.

Indeed. I've read various articles indicating phone companies here would like to adopt that billing practice, but I don't think they'd get away with it, mobile use would plummet.

It's quite common in a number of East Asian countries too. But they don't pay for outbound calls or texts only inbound. Which is why at one point it was free for my Dad to call us from China.

I agree our billing system makes a lot more sense.

The difference (so I've been told) is that all numbers in the USA are location based, ie a mobile phone purchased in NYC would have an NYC dialling code. Thus outgoing calls are charged at a standard rate whether you are calling a landline or a mobile. Therefore you as the mobile owner pick up the extra cost of the connection when you receive the call.

In the UK out mobile numbers are obvious by the 07 prefix, thus the person making the call knows they are calling a mobile and it is therefore ok to charge more (as they will be aware). The caller therefore picks up the extra charge.

Its the same general principle as receiving calls on a uk phone when abroad. When someone from the UK calls you, they do not know you are abroad and can therefore not be expected to stump up the additional cost which is why you pay it to receive the call.
