Whats the views of other people on here about the current Album Chart top 10. I think its full of compilation crap like Now Dance 2001, charva cd's in English!

The current top 10 should consist of Artists only.

So, whats your ideal top 10 Album Chart?

Asda do there own chart - when I worked for them we kept getting details about how they were one of the main retailers for music - I emailed the buying department to ask how they could maintain that when all they stocked were chart albums and a selection of what they think will sell rather than places like HMV and Virgin.
Then I was looking for a particular CD by a metal band that was in the charts and Asda didnt have it - the response being that Asda did their own chart!!!
I refuse to buy CD's from Asda or anywhere else that restricts the stock to just cream off the sales.
HMV, Virgin and independent CD shops may end up costing more but thats cause they are carrying a wider stock where I can find what I want.

As to the charts - I agree....get the compilation CD's out of it!

Asda? One of the main retailers for music?!

I don't suppose the people who worked in the 'George' department got memos telling them they were at the cutting edge of UK fashion retailing as well, did they?

No one should buy music from woolworths EVER! the chart in there is fake, all shops should have the offical chart, if slipknot is number 1 in the album chart then woolworths should sell it and should be number 1 in the chart (dunno if they had it or not when it was number 1). If they dont want the proper chart then they shouldn't sell music at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Woolworths chart (album and single) is made up of first day sales I believe i.e. - compiled from sales of monday only.

Difference is Woolworths only stock 9 new singels a week (except the week after christmas), albums I'm not sure about.

The reason you shouldn't buy singles from Woolworths is because they wrap them in tape which by the time you've removed you've also broken the case into 7 or 8 pieces.

This country should have a chart system like America. Which is not just compiled by crap shops like Woolworths or Asda.

The bilboard charts are compiled by the following methods Combined:

Radio air play
Retail Sales
Internet sales
Concert ticket sales

This would give our charts a much more accurate reading of popularity and accurate sales. And, maybe, just maybe, our singles charts can be of the quality of the bilboard's.

P.S. Why is the UK album charts much better than the singles charts?

Probably down to the age range that buy CD's - I can't remember the last time I bought a single but it was before I had a CD player for starters!
Most people in their 20's and 30's don't bother buying songles and just wait for the album to come out so the singles chart gets dominated by teen music - doesnt mean i don't liek some of the stuff that makes the chart but I have never been bothered by the charts....who cares what other people like - as long as I like it thats all I'm bothered about.

Even the producer of TOTP himself, Chris Cowey, thinks the singles chart is going downhill; he said he's trying to look beyond it, by picking out the UK's favourite tracks from other sources such as MP3 download, 12" vinyl dance tracks etc.

Yeah that's already been suggested for the bilboard charts. Adding the most downloaded MP3's into the overall structure of the chart.

If MP3 downloads were taken into consideration when compiling the chart it would certainly slow the chart down (less new entries, longer chart reigns), but it's not like there is only one chart. There's the sales chart, the Pepsi chart is sales and airplay (except the top 10), there's request charts, download charts, plus specialist charts.

I do agree that our chart sucks compared to the US (not the music in the chart, but the way it's compiled) - too many no. 1s, new entries at their peak, short chart stays, and UK is the only country like that.

I rarely buy albums, I have bought about 300 singles in the last 6 years, and I'm 18, so it's not just kids that buy singles, but it mainly is. I think females buy singles more aswell.

This country should have a chart system like America. Which is not just compiled by crap shops like Woolworths or Asda.
Well, our sales chart is based on sales from most major retail stores, not just those two. But I believe 75% of CDs bought are perchased from Woolies.

The only reason the UK chart is so 'fast' is that record companies have become so much more aggressive in the marketing and promotion of singles and groups than they used to be (as recently as 5-10 years ago).

So the other 25% is devided from HMV, Virgin, Our Price, Tesco's, Tower Records and all the other shops that sell music! I doubt it! I dont know anyone who buys CD's in Woolworths.

Are the same methods used for compiling the singles chart used in compiling the album chart? i.e do they use the same shops to monitor sales?

If this is the case can someone tell me why Slipknot's 'Iowa' went to number 1 in the album charts(with very healthy sales) and their new single relaesed this week 'left behind' is currently set to enter the charts at number 23? This happend with Staind aswell, the album went to number 1, whilst the single only entered at number 15. I know these American bands nowdays seem to be releasing their albums before any singles - and therefore some fans may just not bother with the bands singles releases. But it still doesn't compensate for the huge gap between album and singles sales, especially when these bands have quality B-sides on their singles.

The same stores are used.
The reason is the kind of people who liek Slipknot & Staind don't generally buy singles.
That's often why some pop bands have number one singles, and their albums don't make the top 10, because their fans tend to buy singles.

To be quite honest about the singles chart, I think it is a load of rubbish and I have never bought a CD single in my life. I will go out and buy the album. I normally wait until the 3rd or last single to come out before making my mind up about buying it. That way I don't get ripped off by buy radio edits or edited versions of the full songs.

yeah but nine times out of ten you do get the album version or the original edit on the single plus the odd remix and a video. Terefore its not like you say in most cases.

Also, some bands, mainly dance acts, don't release albums.
And you get some singles which are not on an album - like Whatever by Oasis.

Can I just argue that you were 12 when you started buying these albums so you were technically a kid...

the average age of the Top 10 buying public is 11

and is 60% female.
