Any noticeable changes ? It doesnt make the phone sluggish at it, does it? Ive done a Download Only for the moment. Unsure whether to install it after what happened with my old 3G & OS 4.0!

I had nothing but trouble with the last two updates for 4 on my 3G but this one went without any hitch and has not made the phone any slower than the original 4 update....

I've downloaded 4.2 & lost my Jailbreak & my apps., wished I'd realised as there's no way to downgrade to 4.01.

There isn't an "official" way to downgrade to 4.0.1 ...... *walks away whistling innocently*

There is...

You need to "acquire" 4.0.1 (if you don't still have it on your computer), put your iPhone into DFU mode, & then point iTunes at 4.0.1.

DFU:

http://www.ismashphone.com/2008/08/recovery-dfu.html

To point iTunes to the file you have, hold down "Shift" & click on "Restore". It will allow you to browse to the firmware file you want to install.

If you have a 3GS/4, and if Apple has now stopped signing 4.0.1, then the only way you can downgrade is if you have previously used Cydia or Firmware Umbrella to store your device's unique "SHSH blobs" for iOS 4.0.1 (e.g. you let Cydia "Make your life easier"). You then have to trick iTunes into looking at Cydia/Umbrella for the firmware signature, instead of Apple's server.

However, from what I can find, Apple is still apparently signing 4.0.1, at least it was as of yesterday.

Well the Dev team has done it again, they have released their own version of the patch which enables you to keep your jailbreak.

Nice try Jobs n co but hackers will always find a way of beating your restrictions.

Yup, it's by Jay "saurik" Freeman (author of Cydia, etc.)

The most notable feature of iOS 4.2 is it activates the hidden time travel feature which is currently switched off on all models

if you had jailbroken it then there is a chance cydia saved your shsh blobs on it's server. There may be a way to downgrade.

Settings > General > Flux capacitor

Just switch to 'On'.

Yeah, although I'm still on 3.1.2 here, I let Cydia get hold of my blobs and keep its hands on them.

I don't want to upgrade to 4.x yet as I think some of the apps I use will malfunction, and I'm afraid of performance issues (I have a 2nd gen iTouch). Essentially I have nothing to gain, and potentially a bit to lose, given that everything I currently have installed works fine, and I've installed Saurik's PDF fix.
