I have read and watched reviews on the 5810, but the only type of file it talks about importing onto the Toppy from a PC is mp3 audio files. What sort of video files can you import without need to pre-convert them? What I mean is, I don't mind if I put all my files into the Altair thing then copy them across and the process of doing that will change them to .rec, what I don't want is a load of .avi files that I then have to change to .mpg before I can even get started, as re-encoding files has been the real bane of this whole process of using a PC downstairs and having only a TV upstairs. What exactly can you add to the Topfield from your computer?

The Topfield will only play .REC files which are a transport stream (as recorded) with a Topfield header. It will not play anything else without conversion.

Also, Altair is only a transfer programme so the PC will speak to the Topfield USB - it won't convert anything and the transfer speed is pretty slow as well.

I tried it when I first got the box to prove it could be done but never bothered since.

Mpeg Streamclip (freeware) can create .rec files from MPEG files and there is a utility available via Toppy.org which allows you to enter/edit the file's programme details (channel/description) - before transferring to the Toppy.

I have a USB network hub attached between the Topfield's USB port and the router, via a 10m network cable. This allows fairly remote (therefore convenient) access to the Toppy's filesystem.
