Okay, so, while I've been wallowing in self pity after twisting my ankle (well, I twisted it last weekend, and, I'll be honest, I've been milking it to hell and back since then, it doesn't hurt anymore, but, you know, every opportunity....) my dad got me a load of magazines, and one of them was NME (I know), and they had a feature of who readers voted the best guitarists of all time. This is the list:

20. Johnny Marr - The Smiths

19. Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine

18. John Lennon - The Beatles

17. John Frusciante - Red Hot Chili Peppers

16. Eric Clapton

15. Keith Richards - The Rolling Stones

14. Brian May - Queen

13. Pete Townshend - The Who

12. Angus Young - AC/DC

11. George Harrison - The Beatles

10. James Dean Bradfield - Manic Street Preachers

9. Jonny Greenwood - Radiohead

8. Slash - Guns N' Roses

7. Robert Smith - The Cure

6. Graham Coxon - Blur

5. Jack White - The White Stripes

4. Jimi Hendrix

3. Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin

2. Matt Bellamy - Muse

1. Joshua Hayward - The Horrors
Thoughts?

My immediate reaction was WTF are Manic Street Preachers doing in the top 10?! They are shit! (Though, I used to like them. Can't stand them now).

I worked from good down to number 1, Josh, who was best of all time apparantly.

Number 1 is a complete joke ! Carl Barat is a far better guitarist than the guy from the Horrors. I would have had Johnny Marr and Tom Morello in at least the top 10 as well. No Noel Gallagher either ? Really strange list if you ask me

So this was voted for by NME readers eh?

I'm actually not sure I have particularly strong views on who the best guitarist of all time is/was, to me technical ability has never been that important.

But I'm pretty sure it's not some bloke from The Horrors.

I thought it was a bit strange.

Don't get me wrong, I adore The Horrors and Joshua is a cracking little guitarist, with real potential to be highly respected one day, but, he needs a few more albums out before he can be considered better than Hendrix, Page and Bellamy.

I can't help but think that maybe Horrors fans cottoned on to this vote and hijacked the competition and voted multiple times?

But, good on Josh, sometimes it's nice for the underdog to rule above his idols.

Yeah the Horrors are a pretty good band, Horrors fans voting is the only possible explaination I can think of for him being number 1.

I suspect you may be on to something there!

But yeah, The Horrors are decent enough but I don't think their guitarist could yet be classed as the, er, best guitarist of all time.

But as for rest of the list...dunno really. Was John Lennon really that good a guitarist?

Carlos Santana and Peter Green would have to be in my top 20.

Hendrix needs to be number one, as much as I love the Horrors, they can't touch the legend that is Hendrix.

Definitely, was just about to say the same thing. Other honourable mentions; Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, BB King & Chuck Berry.

I did post a list of my favourite guitarists on here before, dunno where though.

There was a time when the NME could have been taken seriously, and probably any list they compiled would be at least realistic of the time - this shows how far the rag has fallen!

Agreed with Johnny Marr, Noel is average though, legendary songwriter but limited guitarist.

That list is a joke...I'm sure even John Lennon would admit Jeff Beck was a lot better than him!

Peter Green needs to be in there, as does James Burton and a host of old blues dudes and country pickers.

Thank god I'm not the only one who was thinking that! A great songwriter, sure, but, I wouldn't say he was famed for his guitar skills.

I think Hendrix or Page should be number one.

Am I the only one who think's Slash is overrated?

Yeah, I wouldn't say Noel is a great guitarist, but he should definatley be in the list before Joshua Hayward and James Dean Bradfield in my opinion.

Richie Sambora always seems to get forgotten. Very underrated guitarist, IMO.

Just to point out that Porl Thompson is the greatest guitarist in The Cure, not Robert Smith.

The list is just too much of a joke to take seriously, I thought it was upside down as Johnny is still my number one

I was just shocked that Hendrix wasn't number 1, I mean, I listen to music of most of the artists on there and it's always Hendrix that blows me away when I listen to him

Matt Bellamy is not better than Jimmy Page, why is Clapton so high up and where the hell is Peter Green?

Typical NME...

The clue is in the 'guitarists' bit. It's not a list of 'best bands'.

I'm not a great fan of the Manics these days; I though they went downhill after their debut album.

However, as a guitarist of limited repute myself, I think James is an excellent player.

Brian Tatler should be in that list, as should Francis Dunnery and Brian Setzer. They all have different styles, but are some of the best in their field,
