Samsung LCD 40" help
Hi
I have previously posted before about my tv and its ethernet port on the back. However, I have just noticed a setting in the menu where i can enter a ip address, subnet, gateway and DNS. My virgin media router is next to the tv. If i plug an ethernet cable from the tv to the router and enter the right addresses, what will this allow me to do??? Will it allow an internet connection? |

Yes that will work fine. Is there a DHCP on your TV else you will need to pick an IP address that will not clash with the ones given out by the router but works with it.
If you go your PC, open a cmd prompt (start -> run -> cmd.exe) and type ipconfig all it will tell you the IP address range your router is using, e.g. 192.168.0.11 replace the last bit with something like 151 so it reads 192.168.0.151 and use that on your TV. The rest of the IP details can be copied from your PC. |

Some TV's allow iPlayer type services, and various applets built-in (or downloaded by) the TV - or it might just be for software updates?.
It almost certainly won't be an Internet browser. |

The connection is for playing media files off your PC. So, we are talking about photos, music and some types of movie files already stored on your PC.
As Nigel said, this isn't a connection that allows you to surf the web. Nor is it a connection that allows you to play things like YouTube or LoveFilm. Your TV doesn't support live streaming from the web. Page 28 and onwards in your manual goes on at length about the different file formats supported, and about MSC, PTP, DNLA, FAT and NTFS, file number limits and so on and so on. You'll also need to enable network sharing on certain folders of your laptop that you want to access via the network. |

Thank you Chris for your very informative response. It is very helpful. I shall enable sharing on my laptop. Cheers.

Yeah, it does, I have a Sammy C650 and there's apps for Lovefilm, YouTube and even BBC iPlayer which all support the streaming of video content.
My older Sammy B650 TV could do this as well, for YouTube. If you have found a way to make this TV surf the web with just a direct connection to a router and the net then there'll be a lot of people interested in how it is done. Do share... ![]() Incidentally, the 650 is a different series with a higher spec. The C650 certainly has the Internet@TV feature - it's one of the big selling points of that series. |

It's funny then that none of the other forum sites, and none of the retailers, and not even Samsung themselves are saying that the TV supports Samsung's own Internet@TV feature.
I have a Sammy C650 and I can use the Internet apps to access iPlayer; Twitter; Lovefilm; Facebook and christ knows how many other features. By internet, I don't mean internet surfing, and neither do Samsung - I mean using apps which use the internet. Don't believe me? See what other C650 owners are saying: http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-l...ternet-tv.html http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-l...rs-thread.html And see what the BBC say about iPlayer on Sammy TVs/Blu Ray players: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/N...thread=7637585 And see Page 39 of the User Manual: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/t...il&tab=support My old B650 didn't support apps, but it had YouTube functionality built in, whack in a network connection and you're done. |

The 650 is a superb piece of kit.
By the way, it took me TWO DAYS to get the internet@tv thing working. In the end, I had to manually input the DNS address and assigned it the public address that is store in my router - god knows why it couldn't point to the modems DNS. Now got the firmware updates, LoveFILM, You Tube, the whole lot! |
