Does your favourite music predate you?
Following on from another thread…
Straightforward question - does your favourite music predate you? Nostalgia is a very powerful emotion and I think many people like music of the past, but it’s probably a little odd that I feel that same “emotion” for a period and hence music that predates my birth. In reality many of those years were probably difficult to live through so I guess what you fall for is a romanticised image of those times, but that doesn’t really matter as music is all about escapism anyway… Fairly obviously the golden era of romantic Italian opera predates me, as does the music of Mozart etc. Most those who read my comments in the music threads will probably be away that my all time favourite singer Deanna Durbin falls outside that category, being a film actress… Even my interests in “pop” mostly predate the early 60s, basically the Rock and Roll era. I do like some "modern" music but the majority of my musical interests lay firmly in the past and I suspect I'm not alone in that... am I?

I'm the opposite I was born in 1990 but all my favourite stuff is in the 00's. Although there also are 90's albums that I adore.
I have huge respect for the bands that paved the way for music in the past. |

My music definitely pre-dates me, you can't know where your going unless you know where you've been, that's my motto

Most of it. I'm 1994 so there's not much point ignoring the wonderful music that came before me.

My taste definitely predates me. To date, of my "Main Songs" playlist, 256 songs come from before I was born, and 93 from 'the other side', including 18 from the actual year I was born.
My favourite years include 1978 with 28 songs, 1980 with 20, 1986 with 32 and 1987 with 21. |

I'm a big fan of the late 70's punk scene, which was around a couple of years before I was born.

Definitely agree with the OP. I was born in 1989 and the vast majority of music I listen to is from the 70s and 80s, mainly classic rock and heavy-metal. A lot of modern bands I like also have their roots in that sort of music, such as The Answer, who are basically a 21st century Led Zeppelin lol.

Definitely not for me, but then I was lucky enough to be born so long ago that my teenage years were during the 80s.

I'm somewhat ashamed to say I know pretty much nothing about music from before my time (1988)
In fact I hardly know anything about 90's music either

My dad helped me fill in with 70's and 80's or whatever with like Queen and Bon Jovi. He helped me fill in the empty rock patch in my life.

My favourite music predates me by twenty years-the 60s, in particular, Motown. For me, no music since has ever come close.

My music predates me by over half a century. I listen to old jazz from the 1930's and 40's. Absolutely adore Billie Holiday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLvAxqSeCtk
She was a true artist, lived every word of her songs. I wish music was still like that today. No one sends a chill down my spine like she does. Even the way songs were recorded in those days, that scratchy high grainy quality, I just love it. Everythings too clean and polished today I feel. I would have loved to be born in that era. People say im an old soul in a young body. |

a very interesting question
i grew up listening to pop music from the early 60's right upto today... so the simple answer is no, because i cannot connect with earlier music, thats because having lived through the various styles over the years i can put them in context. i remember what society was like and how it impacted on music. the styles / genres reflect the mood of youth culture of the time, so i wonder what its like for all of you younger fans who recognise good music that pre-dates your birth, but havnt perhaps got the context in which it was created...... i mean, listen to punk and im guessing that in todays polished world some might think 'wtf'? but in to context of the time that style of music was completely relevant. to me, at 20, it completely epitomised the dark depressing days for young people in the late 70's with 'no future'... it was youth rebelion in the raw.. do people who like punk retrospectively get this? or are you using punk and putting your own meaning to it? (im not saying thats wrong). |

I'm a 90s child and my taste leans towards music made in the 50s or 60s. I do listen to current pop/RnB, but I find that I actually prefer older music overall.

Well a bit of both really... I do like the old 50s/60s rock and roll stuff, which I suspect stems from the fact that my parents used to listen to Jimmy Saville's Old Record Club every Sunday lunchtime during my childhood. I also swiped all their old records in my teens (though they wouldn't let me have the 78s) because they gave me their old record player when they bought a stereo one!
But I was a teenager in the mid eighties, and I still love a lot of the music from that era, which is mainly nostalgia based. There are so many songs from that period that instantly take me back to this place, or that party - nothing else can evoke quite the response that music can! |

As much as I love old time classics, I think my favourite music belongs with the present

I have a mix bag of interests when it comes to music but my artists who I regard as my faves were around long before myself hehe. I'm a 80s/90s kid but I'd much prefer some rock music from the 70s (e.g Queen) or jazz or soul from 30s/40s/50s (e.g.ray charles, billie holiday)

I love Johnny Mercer, I was at an Alambama 3 concert a few weeks ago....musically miles apart but the only thing that matters is that I enjoy them... it doesn't matter when you discover certain music as long as you like it and introduce others to it. |

That's a great post, sorry to edit it.. but I'm in my 30's and I love Deanna Durbin... you do know the story of how she lost out to Judy Garland over a mistaken note from the movie hq? They asked to keep the skinny girl with the voice, the runner got confused and thought it referred to Judy when infact it was Deanna.
Totally off topic for a second, but there's a sweet little film which represents one of the few times they worked together as they were subsequently employed by different studios. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbyPC...7C404&index=17 It's interesting to hear their very different styles side by side... |

I was born in 1983 and I think it would be safe to say a huge majority of what I listen to predates me, absolutely! I love anything from Jimi Hendrix to Miles Davis to Funkadelic to Peter Gabriel. The past few weeks I've been listening to a lot of Jazz especially Oscar Peterson and Duke Ellington and jazz fusion such as Mahavishnu Orchestra. Quote:
