I have bought myself one of these:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ky-hts3305-blk

But I notice the subwoofer is passive.

However, I have an active Yamaha SW-P130 with advanced YST from my old speaker system.

Does anyone know which is better?

It just depends on your amplifer, does it need an active or passive sub?.

A simple way to tell is to checki what the socket is on the amp, and how it's labelled - for a passive sub it';s probably simple screw terminals, and will be labelled "4-16 ohms 100W" or something similar.

An active sub output will probably just be a phono socket.

However, the Yamaha sub doesn't look anything great?.

Being active or passive is irrelevant. What is important is how it sounds and how well it integrates into the rest of the system.

The receiver included in that package does not have a low level Sub output on phono anyway. Only a speaker level output to drive passive subs. So it might not connect to the Yamaha anyway.

Doesn't look like the Yamaha sub has speaker level support, so it looks like using this sub is a non starter.

Personally I would stick with the Onkyo sub, probably not a lot between them, but I'd have to say the Onkyo would have the edge going by the other products Onkyo have on offer.
