Is the sunday Radio 1 top 40 charts still popular?
I remember there used to be a real excitement and buzz about it years ago.

Erm No. The biggest reason is Reggie Yates presenting it. He dosn't seem to know what he is doing, what nunmbers the songs are at in the charts, spends far too much time waffling about irrelevent stuff. I just look on their website after 7pm to save my ears from this embarrasment.

Also there are midweek charts and other updates and info on the net, so there is usually no real surprises any more.
The days of the Tuesday lunchtime charts were still the best as you rushed home during school lunch to listen to it and get back a few minutes late once you discovered that Slade had just gone straight to no.1

When I was a kid I would religiously listen to the Radio 1 singles charts. I stopped that in around 1995 when I realised how much garbage it was, and I was only 12.

It's just a run down of the top 40 highest selling singles that week, not the 40 best songs that week, and with the likes of street teams, buying squads, multi buying etc, those figures are easy to manipulate. In short, they mean nothing. |

As a 15 year old male I can safely say the charts has turned to shit. Teenie boppers and chavs have taken over it to make sure that their boomin tunes get to the top spot.

Everyones opinion is different. When Joe Dolce beat Vienna to no.1 in 1981 I am sure NOONE thought that was even in the best 200 songs of the week, but it just happened to outsell one of the best ( in many peoples views)songs of that year. |

I remember in mid 1980s, there used to be two charts-The Network Chart which was on Capital and other stations across the Country and the BBC chart, both on at the same. The Network Chart was more up to date on the Sunday and sometimes the number ones for the week would be different. The new BBC chart was announced everyweek at 1pm on a Tuesday and people in shops and factorys etc used to listen to it.I can remember the sixth formers in school having it blurring out as well. Then it moved to Tuesday mornings and then it moved to Sundays which basically finished off the Network Chart in terms of popularity. Its a shame the charts are not as popular as it used to be a big deal. The only time I listened to it recently was after MJ died and loads of his songs went back into the charts. |

When was it that the Radio 1 chart show stopped playing every song in full? I hadn't listened to it for a couple of years before that, but I remember listening to it when the band Easyworld were expecting to chart with 'til the day in January 2004, and I was disappointed when they only played a clip.

By the time I left I was already starting to do the odd spot of DJ work and so used to have to obtain most the new entries, therefore it remained significant until I gave that up. |

I follow the charts religously, but I rarely listen to them these days because of Reggie. I dont like to hate, but he is by far the worst DJ on Radio 1. He has no idea what he's doing, frequently makes mistakes, and just generally sucks.

i used to love taping the charts. i used to record a gap between the songs, so i could record over the top in my own voice "a new entry at number 13". it used to be a straight forward countdown, no interview, no album charts, and songs moved up and down, it was so exciting. A song could enter the charts at number 20 and would be considered a success, climb up to 10 then to 8 then to 1 and stay there and slowly fall down the charts.
Nowadays if a song doesnt get to number 1 on release - its considered a failure. Just for the record, i grew out of that about 20 years ago...

In 2005 when JK & Joel took over it was the worse period as they only played 21-40 in a 10 minute segment but by the end of their time it had reverted back to something similar to what Wes had done (probably because Downloads had started to make the top 40 more interesting). |
