There have been tracks that have had lyrics replaced or removed to make them more broadcast friendly. Any examples you can think of? Here are two to start us off:

Rat Trap - Boomtown Rats ("Pus and grime" line replaced - very conspicuously too!!)

Not Fair - Lily Allen (The word "head" 'bleeped out' by the accordion)

Heart fm never play flo rida's rap. There is a verison where Alex sings another verse on Bad boys

They never play the rap version of Enrique's I like it with pitbull. Heart fm have a major thing about never playing rap. You'll never heard an eminem song be played.

Thats actually brilliant. I had a good "lol" at that one.

I do a day time student radio show and swearing in songs causes me no end of grief.

I played a Dead Kennedys song called "Police Truck" on our show, my co host and I both remembered it as being "quite clean for a Dead Kennedys song". Anyone who has heard it will know this song is not radio friendly.

Anyway, the end result being that clean radio versions of songs is my eternal quest!

When ke$ha's Animal leaked, Backstabber was supposed to say 'shut your mouth, shut you mouth' shut your f****** mouth'. But when I bought the CD it had been changed to 'you never shut your mouth'.

Yeh, I had been thinking about doing this when term goes back, I was worried about the legality of playing edited versions of songs as the station manager goes nuts at us if we play bootlegs.

I don't want the university getting sued because i want to play a Jamie T album track.

I'll certainly be doing that if its legally ok.

In "2 Become 1" The Spice Girls changed:

"Once again if we endeavour, boys and girls look good together"

to...

"Once again if we endeavour, love will bring us back together"

It was thought the lyric on the album version was alienating to gay and lesbian people.

I'm no legal expert but surely that would be OK?

I'm a law student, so i suppose I'm quite cautious in this respect. I've not actually studied media/communications law though so i'm no more informed than the man on the street.

My logic had been that as we can't play mashup/bootlegs for legal reasons the same logic would apply to any un official edits.

I would be very, very happy to be proved wrong on that though.

Maybe you're right. It'll be very interesting to find out the legal view on this. Too bad it's university recess ATM as you could have asked your lecturers.

Kanye West - Gold Digger

The word n.... was replaced with repeating "broke" in the chorus.

I hate the song but it's one that came to my mind.

There's obviously an awful lot of songs which have had one or two words altered to be radio friendly, but there's also a lot which have had full verses, hooks and even a chorus taken away... probably for timing reasons.

I suspect it will probably be a disputed legal point. I shall investigate in September!

on the work radio station the lyric "Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the arse" on Scouting for Girls song Heartbeat was changed to "Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the behind"

I don't think I've ever heard any radio station play the full version of Common People by Pulp.

There's a whole extra verse in there that I didn't know about until I (gulp) heard William Shatners version.

I've noticed that a lot of versions of older songs that Real Radio play have bits 'missing', mostly instrumental sections (REM's Losing My Religion is like edited highlights and I heard an Aerosmith song, can't remember which, with bits snipped out).

Nothing offensive missing, just edited for timing (like films on ITV), and you feel silly when you're singing along and doing your best air-(insert lead instument here).

the saturdays "issues"

actual line - don't know if I should slap you or kiss you
changed line - don't know if I should leave you or kiss you

Apparently, slap sounds like stab.

Bootlegs in general are illegal (with the exception of legal bootlegs), but just editing out a swearword is perfectly legal. In fact, you're making a song compatible with broadcasting regulations.

As far as I'm aware, it's all covered under your broadcast licence.

Omg, there was a article on here about that. So stupid. They had to re-record the song and everything.

I was on holiday a couple of years back in Florida and The Black Eyed Peas' song 'Don't Phunk With My Heart' came on the radio. I was shocked however when Fergie sang the line "Don't mess with my heart"

I know phunk sounds like the F word but its not so?

D12 had a song called "Purple Pills" and recorded a radio "friendly" version called "Purple Hills" with almost completely different lyrics.
An elderly radio presenter got the two mixed up.
We thought it was hillarious.

I'll send you Jamie T's instrumentals. You can give your listeners his music without the swearing!
