as it says in the title...
my partner has been given a SE C905 that seems to be locked to O2. she's previously been with Orange PAYG and ordered a free O2 sim to use with the new SE C905 but I mentioned Tesco tariffs (PAYG and 30-day sim-only contract) to her, which seem an alternative to O2 PAYG. Before activating anything, would a Tesco sim work in an O2 locked phone (seeing Tesco uses O2)?

I tried to find out more on this on both Tesco's websites for phone as well as O2.. maybe my search skills let me down

Thank you kindly for your help

It depends on the way the phone was locked. Most phones are locked to the Service Provider and so it wouldn't work. Occasionally, phones are locked to the 'physical' network in which case it would work.

urgh... well.. all I know is that it couldn't be used with the current Orange sim and was used with o2 in the past hence the assumption it was locked to o2...

That's not true. See my earlier post, it depends how the phone is locked.
The only way to be sure is to try it, as SIMs are given away nowadays its easy to do.

I bought an iPhone 3g on O2 last year that was an "unwanted upgrade". It refused my Tesco sim card, but I went into the O2 shop and it was explained to me how to get it unlocked. I bought 20.00 of credit for the 'phone, went to O2's website to request an unlock, giving the i.m.e.i number. About 5 days later I got a text telling me it was officially unlocked (They charged 15). Job done.

Tesco phones are double locked to Tesco, So an o2 sim would not work in a Tesco phone. But o2 phones are single locked to o2, so a Tesco sim would work in an o2 phone.

I know Tesco phones are more locked than o2 ones, and its the phone rather than the sim that is locked. So it should work, as Tesco uses the o2 network facility.

Yep, the MNOs usually only single-lock to their network. The MVNOs double lock to their particular operation. So virgin sims work in a t-mobile locked phone but not vice versa.
