Do you mean you have connected a scart from the video to the s-video socket on your tv?
Does your video output s-video? Does your TV have s-video capabilities, and have you turned them on in the menu? You will normally get a b/w picture if the answer to any of these are no. |

As rich_jtg said, you will get a black and white picture if you have the settings wrong on your TV or VCR. If you check those and they are OK, the most likely cause is that the SCART lead that you have is not fully wired. Many SCART leads only connect the video and audio pins. To use a SCART lead for an S-Video connection, it must have all pins connected as the chroma (colour) signal uses one of the pins normally reserved for RGB signals.

Is your VCR an S-VHS VCR? If not and it's just a standard VHS VCR then it'll only output a composite picture so you'd need to use the composite socket on the TV or a SCART socket.
