Seemingly that is what some artists have been offered. It means that they only get 6% of the profit (after all the costs have been deducted) and anything they do - concerts , modelling etc 94% goes to the music label. Explains the predominance of female acts (income from lads mags etc) and really shows the whole industry up for the sham it is.

I've heard loads of bands say recently that there's no hope in making money from selling music. The only way is to get out there and perform live, make appearances etc...

Even with live music there's always a middle-man involved who takes a pretty penny from the ticket sales.

Some acts go as far as having to fund their own videos and photo shoots.

Yes, EMI were offering them out a few years ago to quite a few artists (you know, the one's who aren't megastars and rake in the cash) but a lot of them rejected, which is why they cut a load of artists. One of those artists wrote a little song from whilst they were signed and thereafter

Money Back

I want my money back, the sale is over,
you keep your lifetime gaurantee.
Give me my money back, let's call this closure,
'coz what you got don't work for me
"Lifetime gaurantee" referring to the fact that they own all the royalties, and "what you got don't work for me" is a firm rejection of the 360 contract.

Nothing changes.

Ray Davies, 1970.

Robert owes half to Grenville
Who in turn gave half to Larry
Who adored my instrumentals
And so he gave half to a foreign publisher
She took half the money that was earned in some far distant land
Gave back half to Larry and I end up with half of goodness knows what
Oh can somebody explain why things go on this way
I thought they were my friends I can't believe it's me, I can't believe that I'm so green
Eyes down round and round let's all sit and watch the moneygoround
Everyone take a little bit here and a little bit there
Do they all deserve money from a song that they've never heard
They don't know the tune and they don't know the words
But they don't give a damn
There's no end to it I'm in a pit and I'm stuck in it
The money goes round and around and around
And it comes out here when they've all taken their share
I went to see a solicitor and my story was heard and the writs were served
On the verge of a nervous breakdown I decided to fight right to the end
But if I ever get my money I'll be too old and grey to spend it
Oh, but life goes on and on and no one ever wins
And time goes quickly by just like the moneygoround
I only hope that I'll survive

Now for these labels tellin' fables,
Makin' the messed-up deals under the tables.
You think that you smart, but, fool, I'm the smartest.
You can't make no money if you can't keep an artist.
Sign the dotted line, put 'em on the shelf.
Break 'em off some crumbs, keep the rest for yourself.
I know how it goes, treat an artist like you know,
Fly cars, gold, clothes, but no dough.
Since it's all business, I'm-a handle mine,
Keep track of my stack down to the very last dime,
'Cause in this rap game, it's all about the buck.
You bend over for the label and you will get bucked,
Like how we run up in the skirt, and then you're through.
The record label do the same thing to you.
90% business, 10% show.
Ain't no love in this game, 'cause it's all about the dough.

I find it a little odd and questionable how much artists make

I think american acts make more. Particulary the ones who have full control. Beyonce and Mariah to name a few. Beyonce made like 50 million last year. Makes you wonder how much of that was her album and singles. Britney made about 62 million last year as well.
