Whitney or Mariah?
Me and my mate are having a wee argument over who is the better artist/singer.
So... |

Mariah is the G.O.A.T
But Whitney is amazing aswell. They are both in a league of their own. And no-one has ever come close to them. |

Well I'll go by my Ipod. I have 1 Whitney song and 4 Mariah ones so it's Mariah Carey for me.

Mariah definately, she is my favourite artist of all time. She has consistently released amazing music for 20 years. Look at all the great songs she's written, not just for herself but for others too

Mariah, because she's the creative driving force behind all of her own output whereas Whitney never wrote much and worked with a system where Clive Davies would find & take songs to her.
But they'll always be that much better than any of todays lot, all the 'new Mariah/Whitney' tags are nonsense because they don't come close! |

![]() Whitney's tracks (in their heydays) for me outshine Mariah's. The only Mariah song from the 90s that I love is Always Be My Baby, the rest I can take or leave. I think Mariah has the voice but not the strongest material to my taste lol. Her current stuff is miles ahead of Whitney's of course. |

I really think Charice can grow up to become as good as a vocalist as these two were, if not even better.

Charice has the most potential I have seen in any of the singers that came after Mariah and Whitney.

Charice is a fantastic singer with talent beyond her years, but she really doesn't have Mariah/Whitney level of vocals I don't think.
It seems very forced and diva-by-numbers to me. Plus she just imitates the greats when singing them, she doesn't appear to have her own style and I really don't like her put on tone...it's like what people do when singing karaoke. That weird growling/nasal kind of thing...usually on 'yeahs'. Anyways, on topic... Back in the day, Mariah's belting/riffs were insane. My favourite thing she does is that crack/slide between notes in her upper register. So pure and spine tingling. Whitney is incredible too though. Hmm. |

Oooh this is a tough one. Both are just amazing vocalists, and have had huge careers.
I can't decide! |

They are the greatest female singers to ever grace this Earth, no one comes even close to them.
With that said Mariah wins for me by quite a significant margin, not only does she write and produce her own songs but she has such a beautiful and unique voice that has touched me like no other. |

Mariah by far, for me. I love the beautiful tone and quality to her voice, very soothing. Whereas I've always found Whitney's voice quite strident and forced, especially when belting out the big notes. I liked some of Whitney's early songs but like I said, not the tone of her voice.
As for Celine Dion, she always sounds like she has her mouth full of porridge when she sings. Sure she has a wide vocal range but sounds a bit too foghorn-ish for me. |

hmm its a toughy and depends on what your judging by better. Song wise, Whitney had some great ones but they declined, Mariah is pretty consistent (she has her dodgy moments though) - also Mariah writes nearly all of her songs which is a big thing for me in giving credit to an artist, whitney is a bit more manufactured perhaps.
Power wise, Whitney hands down! Range Mariah hands down - vocal tone - mariah higher notes, whitney mid notes. Vocal technique definitely Mariah and control probably mariah edges it. So yeah depends on what your looking at, i'd say overall though Mariah is 'better' due to her longevity and more consistent good songs/vocals (until like 2007/8 - onwards). I also think Mariah has more technical ability in what she can do with her voice. But both legends, for me Mariah just ahead! (Also about Charice - agree - she is trying for the Diva moments but their not really happening, she has the voice (albeit quite forced) but not much else imo, and for Celine she's great, but she doesn't register in league with Mariah or Whitney for me, good not amazing) |

It's got to be Mariah!
Mariah has written and co-produced nearly all if her music she is a true creative soul and a complete musician. She has complete musicianship over her voice and uses it like an instrument. Mariah has consistently given good music throughout her career. Vocally Mariah beats Whitney too. Whitney is probably the only female singer who can rival Whitney. Whitney is louder is the lower belts but mariah has more power in lower register and upper belts as well as having a more agile fluid voice that is more textured and versatile. But it's how mariah uses all the facets of her voice to create music that gives her the edge. She has true virtuosity over her voice. Whitney is amazing at how she can take a song, that many would make sound cheesy, and turn it into a classic. They are both the most amazing vocallists but Mariah was greater! Are people for real about Charice. She is dreadful Whitney and Mariah are echelons above her. She could never compare tomthem vocally. Dreadful technique, shouting and a fake forced tone = awful!!! |

On the technical side of things, Mariah beats Whitney. Better technique, control, etc. But that doesn't make Whitney any less great.
Lower register: Mariah Mid register: Whitney Upper chest register: Whitney C5-E5, Mariah F5+ Head voice: Whitney Super head voice: Mariah That's what I would say when I hear them both sing. But either way, I don't think they should be in competition with each other. They should just aknowledge the fact that the two of them are the best singers to walk the plant and no one comes close to them. I prefer Whitney's Star Spangled Banner, though. Mariah's is very technical and impressive, but Whitney's is the iconic version because it's just pure, natural singing. And as for Charice, she has a good voice but she has an unnatural tone. She pushes down on her larynx to make her tone sound bigger. And she could never compete with Whitney and Mariah because they set the bar and she's just following what they did. |
