They must be making a healthy profit on the show as well. It's not likely to be expensive to make and with 1.7m A16-34, ITV1 would kill to have the show even if it only has 2.6m viewers overall.

Hopefully it encourages E4 to keep investing in original scripted series. They have a head start on the likes of Sky1 and Living because they have had a few hits in this area already. But they'll need to bring through new hits or else they risk falling behind in the future.

Also, I'm guessing that at the very least The Inbetweeners was the most watched show on commercial TV among adults 16-34. The only show on BBC1 which might have beaten it would be Eastenders?

CW Premieres 2010/11

Women 18-34:

1. The Vampire Diaries - 2.9
2. Hellcats - 2.1
2. America's Next Top Model - 2.1
4. Gossip Girl - 2.0
5. Nikita - 1.8
6. 90210 - 1.7

Adults 18-34
1. The Vampire Diaries - 1.9
2. Gossip Girl - 1.4
2. America's Next Top Model - 1.4
2. Hellcats - 1.4
5. Nikita - 1.3
6. 90210 - 1.2

On the plus side, 90210 was around 20% higher than its season finale in May (the cliffhanger may have worked) while Gossip Girl was flat.

90210 is in its final season unless it can pull things together really fast.

NOTE: Ratings for GG and 90210 are based on fast national numbers and could change slightly when final numbers are released later today. All other ratings are finals.

The makers of Hollyoaks are bringing out a new reality show, 'The Only Way is Essex'. You can audition to be in the show by uploading a video by Thursday 16th Sep to here: http://www.itv.com/channels/itv2/itv...videouploader/

Look at some of the videos people have already sent in: http://www.itv.com/channels/itv2/itv...nlywayisessex/

Brucie did another BBC1 special the following year on his own - in a better slot - which struck me as a bit strange as he was still contracted to ITV at the time.”

Yeah, and Bruce did a series of one of his quizzes (Play Your Cards Right?) on ITV in spring or summer 1994, before ending his BBC contract with his final series of the Generation Game a few months later.

The Inbetweeners will obviously become Channel 4's new flagship show, its capable of getting 4m on Channel 4 imo. I think they should build Friday nights around it at the end of next year to re-establish their ground on Friday nights, something they haven't fully managed to do since they lost Friends and since Big Brother started failing. It could also be worth bringing back Balls of Steel, thats fairly popular on 4Music even though its on its millionth repeat loop.

I think essentially it shows that there are reasonably fixed audiences for the various offerings and it's going to take a lot to shift them significantly. ITV got an initial boost (presumably out of curiosity) but has essentially returned to GMTV levels. However, according to some insider knowledge, the demographics have improved somewhat and the picture is variable across the country.

The cast have said that this series will be the last series of Inbetweeners

In my opinion, Channel 4 were unluckiest when the music stopped this time.

How did Balls of Steel rate when it was on Channel 4? I've seen some of the repeats and I've found it funny in patches. Unfortunately, some of it falls completely flat, too, which might explain why it was "rested", but with a bit more effort and imagination, I think it could be consistently funny.

90210's only saving grace is that it does very well in the Live+7 ratings, it was #1 one week last season.

Generally around 1.5m. Its not great and didn't always get into the top 30 but it was fairly low profile then and never aired until 10.30pm/11pm. But it was still enough to warrant 3 series and an E4 spin off. Its last series was in early 2008, I think they should give it one last chance because there was an 18 month gap inbetween series 1 and 2, and series 3 just came from nowhere. I think it would work a bit better this time given the right slot.

Magnificent rating for The Inbetweeners - it's great seeing a British sitcom build audiences year-on-year and become a juggernaut on multichannel TV. There was an increase of 180% between the end of series 1 and start of series 2, and yesterday's episode was up by a similar amount too. Usually I'm against moving big rated multichannel shows to terrestrial but The Inbetweeners has grown to such a massive level that I think it will be in the best interests of the show and broadcaster to move it to C4 if they make another series. As much as I'd like to see it break multichannel records for possible future series, in a way it's become too big for the platform and deserves a shot on terrestrial TV.

Like Desert Rat says, it could become part of a new Friday night comedy block and it's a cert the show would be getting 3.5m+ on the main channel. The 16-34 figure for it is astonishing - it's the most popular scripted show on TV for that age range bar Doctor Who and EastEnders. I suspect the 16-24 figure might even be beating those two. Even the ABC1 audience is more than some of the 5m+ ITV dramas such as Heartbeat etc. From a commercial viewpoint, it's an advertisers' dream.

Speaking about sitcoms, Him & Her seems to be doing well, increasing its audience by 100k week-on-week. That's probably the last we've seen of Grandma's House, it's been plumetting since the first episode and yesterday it was killed off by the tough competition. As for the terrestrials, a very strong figure for EastEnders. I haven't checked but I'm certain that rating is well up on what it was getting at the same point last year. Bouquet of Barbed Wire fell by 14% from last week which is basically the same as other ITV 3-part dramas such as Murderland, Whitechapel, Wired - it's an okay rating for the type of show it is. I suspect rather than levelling out, next week's rating will fall once again due to Spooks' return.

Pretty poor figures for C4 yesterday, though not surprising at all that The Pope documentary rated like that. Pretty good for C5, I suppose, with 1m+ for over 3 hours straight. Even LFSF did quite well by its standards!

Stunning rating and demo ratings for The Inbetweeners. It must be a real moneyspinner for E4 with a skew like that. Unlike the BBC with Gavin and Stacey, they seem to be happy to leave it on the sister channel and continue to grow there. By now, the BBC had pinched G&S for BBC One (with great success, it has to be said).

Fairly moderate night all round with the exception of that. EastEnders is riding high, though WDYTYA seems to have dropped towards the end of the series with stronger competition and less well-known celebrities. Bouquet of Barbed Wire is decent for ITV.

---

Interesting to see this game of musical chairs now! Can't really see why C4 were so keen to poach Jay Hunt. She's not as bad as sometimes made out (drama is probably stronger on the channel now than it has been for a couple of years) - but she does seem to enjoy putting some pretty bland daytime stuff into the BBC One schedule too. I guess that tendency is better suited to C4...

Danny Cohen would be an interesting choice. No doubt he'd be slaughtered in the press by listing some of his more questionable BBC Three shows, but he does have an strong track record. Indeed, it is he who commissioned the aforementioned Inbetweeners in the first place...

Janice Hadlow from BBC Two would be a safer choice - and they could happily promote Klein from BBC Four to take her remit - but I wonder whether it's not better to give the main channel the kick-up-the-backside that Cohen might provide.

To be fair, BBC Three couldn't afford series three of Gavin and Stacey after BSkyB started sniffing around.

I don't think the BBC should be afraid to look beyond existing channel controllers for the BBC One job. What BBC One needs more than anything is someone with a good track record for successful mainstream comedy. Maybe there are still some successful former BBC Heads of Comedy in the industry? They could even go for a current employee such as Mark Freeland.

Massive Balls of Steel. It was basically the public voting for the best clips from the series, so in other words a repackaged repeat. Not sure how that rated.

ITV to have 90 minute special "The Nation's Favourite Abba Song". Why?

Sounds like something which will air in the Christmas period. Maybe on the Saturday night up against SCD final as filler.

Channel Five haven't been in a position to axe it until recently. Although they could now and keep Five News at 7, in which case we're back to where we were before Studio Five began.

Who was on Studio Five yesterday that got it an extra few viewers?
