WARNING: STRICTLY VS. X FACTOR SCHEDULING POST FOLLOWS.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...etting-on.html

Quote:
“CHEEKY Simon Cowell has urged the BBC to show Strictly Come Dancing in the afternoon - because its fans are getting on a bit.

The X Factor guru - angry at Beeb plans to air the show at the same time as his ITV1 hit - reckons its followers would appreciate the move.

He said: "I'd suggest they show Strictly a bit earlier in the afternoon because their audience is older.

"I'm serious. Then they can have a nap if it finishes at six and watch X Factor later."

Simon claimed Beeb plans to show Strictly simultaneously with X Factor were a "disservice to the licence fee payer".

The move was widely condemned by fans last year.

Si told TV Biz: "We don't pay the licence fee for people to play games with ratings.

"It is childish and pathetic. We gave the BBC a choice last year about different time slots but they have this obsession with competing with us."

Simon indicated he was keen to work with the Beeb to avoid the threatened clash.

He went on: "If X Factor and Strictly are first and second, why would you want to put them on at the same time? It's not fair on licence fee payers."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We're happy to discuss the scheduling, but as far as we're aware it is ITV boss Peter Fincham and not Simon Cowell who makes this decision so it would be best that we talk with him.

"Any decisions we make will be taken with licence fee payers' best interests at heart."”

Haha, like they'd move it to before 6pm. Typical Simon-like comment.

lets be honest, Five USA, is not far off a CBS channel, ok some if its shows are not from CBS, but alot are.

Still the Sky/HBO deal is an interesting point, maybe Five couuld go with Showtime

Very poor rating night in all honesty last night, a lot less people watching TV for some reason.

BBC1 had a good night from 19:30 onwards, with a solid rating for the new series of Waterloo Road. Poor for The One Show, I suspect BBC Two may have dented it with the Blair interview.

ITV had a poor night really, Poirot repeats don't work on ITV1 at all - should have been Midsomer Murders really in that slot. Good night for BBC Two, great rating for Coast - highest of the series I think - while the Higgins documentary did well.

As usual, if unspectacular for C4 and C5.

Waterloo Road did very well to get the highest non soap rating. Thats poor for The One Show, and ITV News was on one of its low days it seems.

Funny seeing BBC 2 beat ITV 1 at 8PM.
The BBC have really messed up this coast though as I don't know if its a new or old one but was nothing else on.

Coast was also not on BBC HD but do have the new ones in my planner.

Strange dip for The One Show. None of the other terrestrial channels did better than usual so it's difficult to see why it fell from its usual 20%+ to 18%. Solid evening thereafter for BBC1 - despite all the scheduling problems for it, Waterloo Road brought in a good audience. Good ratings for BBC2 between 8-10pm, with Coast back up to the levels it should be at after a few weeks of underperforming. Nice to see the Hurricane Higgins tribute get a strong audience.

Poor for the Poirot repeat on ITV1. They haven't repeated Poirot in primetime for a long time, presumably because it doesn't rate too well, so I'm surprised they aired this last night. Next time if they don't want to repeat Midsomer Murders, they should air a Foyle's War or Touch of Frost re-run which both usually bring in about 3.5m. UBB's audience is building after that dip earlier in the week. Bad evening for Five apart from NCIS repeat which was as reliable as ever.

On the subject of HD ratings, Sky said today their biggest HD audience so far was a couple of weeks ago for the first 'Monday Night Football' of the new season.
Quote:
“Sky Sports' biggest HD audience to date was Manchester United's 3-0 win over Newcastle in their opening Premier League fixture of the season last month, which was watched in more than 800,000 homes.”

I'd be interested to know if that is the match average or the programme average.

Also, it isn't mentioned in the actual press release (http://corporate.sky.com/media/press..._landmarks.htm), so not sure where the 800,000 figure has come from.

If it's for the entire show, then more watched in HD, if its for the match only, then more watched in SD.

Doesn't the Sky Panel measure homes not viewers? Before when Sky quote their HD ratings, they've quoted homes.

So 800,000 out of three milion homes, not all of which take Sports is pretty impressive.

How many viewers per home? 1.5 on average, maybe more.

Waterloo road did well last night 5million is brillaint
but i can't see that happen again tonight
I know Waterloo road has an EastEnders lead-in but it's against Corrie and Emmerdale.

Last night's episode was like watching a different show at first but i kind of got into it half way through
but im sure people would have found last nights boring and may not return tonight

Typical of him to trot out the licence fee payers argument. Literally a yawn came out when he wheeled that one out. How else can the BBC measure how well it is serving its audience if not through ratings? And also, if the audience for Strictly is so fundamentally different (older) to The X Factor like he appears to be suggesting, then what does it matter where they put it? Seems a rather inconsistent argument to me.

BBC Press Office update (18th to 24th September):

- Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow returns on 18th September at 21:30
- One-off documentary The Battle Of Britain on 19th September at 21:00
- Spooks and Inspector George Gently both listed as unplaced, I think Gently will be a Wednesday slot at 20:30, with Spooks possibly on Monday. Gently looks like a one-off but the Press Office makes this unclear.

Do I sense another Facebook campaign coming on?

To be fair The X Factor is in a far more dominant position right now after last year. A closer contest this year would be enjoyable. And to see TXF knocked off its perch a bit? That too would be satisfying, because it seems Cowell and co need bringing down a peg or two.

That's a really decent rating for Waterloo Road. The first time its hit the 5million mark since 18 episodes ago in Nov 2009 and last night was its highest share since March 2008. The Beeb have been given a second chance with this show, let's hope they don't go and blow it with erratic scheduling again. Not sure how it will do tonight, a few weeks ago it had 3.75m up against the Thursday Corrie but Waterloo Road was much weaker then.

Seemingly no boost for the new to Channel4 episodes of The Simpsons that started last night then. The continuity announcer did mention new episodes were starting a couple of times but I didn't notice any trailers.

Yes i think so
but this time they need to songs 1 for Xmas number 1 and one for New Years just to piss cowell off.

I think all the Xf team have become so big headed and yes they need bringing down a peg or two

I think the Official charts company should introduce
a new rule and have any song thats played on Reality shows should not be able to chart(as longs it has something todo with the show it's self)

Or Not have them released over 2 weeks of xmas/new year

or even only 3 tracks from the same show(Xf) can chart

That Olly Murrs song really is terrible
yet by Tuesday it had allready sold 45,000 copies
but had he not been on the XF i doubt he'd manage 20,000 let alone be on course for number 1

so it's got stronger by 1 episode?
I think last night it done well simply because it was advertised,it was the start of a new series and there's nothing else on Wednesdays at 8:00pm.

I don't think we will see 5million next Wednesday because my family didn't like the episode yesterday and they've watched and enjoyed it since the start.

I thought it was ok but not brilliant

If Inspector George Gently airs at 8:30pm on Wednesdays, Waterloo Road will have to be moved again. I suppose they can start it at 7:30pm which isn't so bad - in fact it could benefit from The One Show lead-in - but it's yet another timeslot change for the show!

I think George Gently is two episodes this series. Could be facing Midsomer Murders which wouldn't be the wisest move.

I'm surprised he's bothered this year about any potential clash. Having easily won last year and left Strictly engulfed in bad publicity, I'd have thought a repeat would be appealing to him even if not to viewers.

Though I do find it absurd to suggest the only way that the BBC can measure its public service value is by audience figures. The implication being that BBC4 provides less public benefit than ITV2. The important thing is for the BBC to provide services that others can't. Given the way the BBC has grown over the years, it now simply needs the ratings to justify the license fee and its continued existence rather than to justify its public service credentials. There's a difference.

Then again, overlaps with The X Factor didn't exactly aid Strictly last year. So there's really no benefit to be found!

I think he's joking with the older audience bit. Of course the best way for the BBC to measure how well it is serving its audience is ratings, and it does irritate me when people say that the BBC shouldn't care about ratings because of course they should. They certainly aren't the only way that the BBC should measure its success though.

Great start for Waterloo Road. It still begs the question of why are they airing it tonight? With a stronger performance last night I think it'll be able to nudge past 4m tonight. I actually thought last night's episode was much better than anything from the Spring run but WR goes through good and bad patches and last year the Autumn run was much better than the Spring one so we'll see how it goes.

Not sure what they'll do with George Gently. A Sunday slot seems most likely with the documentary moved to another night. Will be an interesting battle between it and Joe Maddison's War, and scheduling will be key. I suspect Spooks will take the Tuesday slot as I can't see them wanting it to clash with Whitechapel on Mondays or Law and Order on Thursdays when ITV are not airing drama on Tuesday. That will leave the Wednesday slot free for The Apprentice too in a few weeks.
