If it's for the entire show, then more watched in HD, if its for the match only, then more watched in SD.”

I would strongly suspect it's the match average.

30% of Sky homes have HD so it seems unlikely over 50% of audience would be watching in HD - even allowing for higher HD penetration in Sky Sports homes.

Also Sky would want to announce the highest figure possible which would be the match figure - eg if programme average was 800,000 that suggests match average around 1m and they would therefore want to announce the 1m figure.

No. Reach is the total number of people that watch a channel over a period of time say 1 week. You can easily get 11m viewers but still reach only 20% of the population, whereas you can have different shows appealing to different audiences that cumulatively get a higher reach.

Appreciation is how well people liked the show. It has nothing to do with the gross number of viewers.

I think George Gently is two episodes this series. Could be facing Midsomer Murders which wouldn't be the wisest move.”

Bang Goes The Theory is on at Wed at 7.30. If George Gently is 90 minutes then the only slot for it is Sunday at 7.30.

My understanding with AI is that people with BARB boxes rate the programme they are watching, is that not the case? It is a rating which reflects quality rather than quantity and should be looked at equally. (and I'm sure they do)

Given the way the BBC has grown over the years, it now simply needs the ratings to justify the license fee and its continued existence rather than to justify its public service credentials. There's a difference.”

Should have been clearer. I was talking about BBC One rather than the BBC generally. Of course what BBC Four does is fantastic from a PSB point-of-view and needs to be assessed in a different way.

it wont end until one is axed, its an ever lasting arguement.

That said in EE 25th year and Corries 50th year, it has been more discussion than normal, given the high profile nature of the celebrations, as wel as the slightly over hyped fall from grace of ITV.

Ah right. 7:30pm would be a bit early for George Gently to air. I think there'll be some changes to that Sunday schedule, maybe ending up something like: 18:30- Countryfile, 19:30- Battle of Britain, 21:00- Inspector George Gently

Appreciation without an audience rating isn't a reliable guide to anything. A "marmite" show that gets a low AI with a reasonable audience for its first episode, may end up with a high AI with a low audience for later shows as the people that don't like "marmite" don't get included in the AI figures.

You mean you don't support one or the other?

It's the Ratings Thread equivalent of Man Utd v Chelsea.

Yes but aren't we comparing Sky Panel HD figures for number of homes watching, with BARB panel SD/HD combined for individual viewers?

We would need to see the Sky Panel SD figures to compare.

Also, now SS1 and SS2 HD are in Virgin homes, do Sky Panel pick those up too?

Whatever, it makes the BARB HD FTA football ratings appear extremely low.

I guess it depends on what ITV do as they've got their first Sunday X Factor that night and I think Joe Maddison's War would be better suited to a pre-watershed slot. I suspect they'll go: 19:15- X Factor, 20:30- Joe Maddison's War. Therefore George Gently will probably also start at 20:30 with the Battle of Britain programme on a different night.

Since Corrie is filmed in Manchester and 'Enders set in London, is that not obvious?

Well the consistent slot for X Factor would have gone straight out the window with that scheduling...

Regarding Corrie, ITV have commissioned a 'special' 2-part documentary later this year showcasing the show's 50 best ever moments.

TXF's scheduling last year before the live shows wasn't too consistent. Two of the Sunday episodes before the first live show began at 19:30 and 19:45 so Score's suggestion is a definite possibility.

Not sure how it will do tonight, a few weeks ago it had 3.75m up against the Thursday Corrie but Waterloo Road was much weaker then.

Seemingly no boost for the new to Channel4 episodes of The Simpsons that started last night then. The continuity announcer did mention new episodes were starting a couple of times but I didn't notice any trailers.”

They've all been on Sky1 anyway, so quite a lot of people will have seen them

Don't worry. If it's a ratings success, there'll be a "51 Best Ever" moments next year...

Thats a very childish comment. I'm no soap fan but CS in the 60's & 70's was truely iconic.
