I don't disagree with it airing on Tuesdays, I just think it should be on Saturdays and Tuesdays - so the Tuesday figure could be inflated as a result. I don't see the purpose of having the debut on Saturday and airing the remainder on Tuesdays - seems slightly odd if you ask me.

It's so that more viewers sample the first episode, which then increases the chance of it doing well on Tuesdays as the debut will have done much better. The first episode should be aiming for 5m+ whereas it would have got 3-4m on a Tuesday, and naturally if the first episode rates better the rest will too. It's a strategy used fairly regularly in the US and is usually successful. As for it not airing on both days throughout the run, I guess they've got nothing else lined up for Tuesdays and these things are generally aired weekly not twice-weekly.

Not a 100% sure but I think it's new. No mention on DigiGuide of it being a repeat.


WDYTYA's ratings vary a lot. In the summer last year, they had episodes rating as low as 4.1m, 4.6m, 4.7m in the overnights. Only Davina's episode had more than 6m. So I think this series has done fine so far - the lowest its fallen was last night's episode which is an improvement on last year's lows.

Edit: This series has averaged 5.4m in the overnights so far. The summer run last year averaged 5.3m. So an improvement year-on-year.

Channel 4 really getting behind This Is England 86.
They have taken out advertising on the ad boards of Switzerland v England which is currently on Sky Sports 2 (and HD).

Wow, doesn't say much about the network if their most successful programme is an STI.

Its mental how they do extreme advertising for one show and then nothing for others... The Inbetweeners is getting a massive ad campaign, its all around Facebook, Twitter, Magazines, TV, also Radio etc...

Now I thought (or someone on here suggested) that it was going to be twice-weekly so that it was all done and dusted for when England play thie home Euro qualifier game on October 12th. Clever scheduling. (Too clever probably.)

If 71 runs weekly from episode 2 then that means it will have to be dropped for a week mid-run for the football. That's the sort of scheduling that always annoys some of our correspondents.

ITV tried a similar scheduling ploy with Rosemary and Thyme in 2003. Episode 1 had a plum Sunday slot and took over 11m viewers. The rest of the series played on Fridays and the ratings went into free-fall. 8m for episode 2 down to 6.5m for episode 5, recovering to 6.75m for (the final) episode 6.

Think Inbetweeners is going to do very well next week for E4.
It could easily do over 2m.

I see Spooks is set for Monday 20th September on BBC ONE.

Monday thrillers get mentioned on here an awful lot, but do they even do them anymore? It's just a drama that happens to be on Monday, surely? The branding, if there is any, is incredibly vague. Monday nights this year have featured Wormwood Scrubs, Married Single Other and that Joanna Lumley thing, so it's hardly an ITV staple. And the programmes are all so different it's hardly a way of getting a loyal audience, you may as well bill The Saturday Night Entertainment Programme.

In 2001, BBC1 did Crime Doubles on Mondays and Tuesdays, which was a proper attempt at branding as every drama was crime-related and it carried on for months with lots of different programmes - Inspector Linley, Silent Witness, all that. Whereas this has just been a couple of dramas on a Monday. You can't compare A Bouqet of Barbed Wire and Whitechapel, one's about a serial killer and one's about incest.

So while it may be suggested that Monday night thrillers are a way of ITV getting an audience, I was suspect that about 95% of the audience doesn't even know they exist. It's just a drama and it's on Monday.

Has to be a repeat, surely. They're not going to waste a new celebrity edition up against X Factor. And the BBC do like their Total Wipeout repeats

Also there were two celebrity editions, so that neatly fills the gap until Strictly starts its regular Saturday programmes. It's not going to get many viewers, though. (Total Wipeout I mean, not Strictly.) 2 point something or other. (I'm assuming ITV1 will move X Factor back to 7.30 until Strictly returns and then they'll move it to 8 o'clock. I assume they were tricked into moving X Factor to 7.45 this weekend cos BBC1's original schedule placed Strictly between 7.05 and 8.05. Or maybe 71 Degrees has to start after 9pm cos there's a lot of effing and blinding in all that cold weather.)

They were branded 'Monday Night Thrillers' for a period of time at the beginning of last year but you're right in saying that's no longer the case.

Yeah I think Inbetweeners will break 2m too. Do you know what ITV are airing before X Factor on Sunday 19th September?

He would be foolish to quit The X Factor when there is absolutely no guarantee it'll actually work in America.

BGT though seems the right time to move on with Piers looking to join CNN and Amanda debuting in Shrek The Musical in May. In many ways I think a brand new panel is easier to sell than just replacing Simon Cowell.

Not that ridiculous - 2m people watching it in one of the toughest slots C4 has, topped up with three quarters of a million on +1. If it had been at 9pm I don't think they'd have been much difference.


Not mental at all - they're shows which really warrant the support. What is mental though is how they pushed the boat out to promote Ultimate Big Brother/BB11 having already decided it's fate - but hadn't promoted the show anywhere near as significantly since at least BB7.


C4'E4 looks pretty strong next week - E4 on Monday for Inbetweeners/School of Comedy, then This is England, Grand Designs and True Blood has me for an hour the next three nights. So far not seen anything new in the BBC or ITV weekday schedules that feels worth watching.

I didnt think Undercover Boss deserved all the promotion though.

Well the difference from the last GMTV rating is about 100,000 isnt it? I would have expected a bit more of surge even if it was like me, just out of curiosity-especially given all the press attention the Chiles/Bleakley will they wont they scenario has gathered. It feels like people couldnt give a monkeys about the new dawn.
One thing that isnt in Daybreaks favour is the lack of proper teletext. The first thing I do when I sit down with my Corn Flakes is grab the remote and get up to date bring up the news and sport on Ceefax. For me thats a clear reason not to tune into ITV.

Strictly speaking, the multi-multi-multi-multi millionaire Mr Cowell doesn't need to do another's day work for the rest of his life if he wants.

And should Simon quit UK X Factor and then decide at a later date, for whatever reason, that he wants to come back, then I don't thnk ITV would stand in his way.

Useful if not brilliant for Daybreak, and the standard of the show from what I've seen seems superior to GMTV.

BBC1 did reasonably - the filler shows were never going to do fantastically cinsidering Coronation Street is starting to get into it's stride again. EastEnders, at the start of a big week for the show, did brilliantly. Who Do You Think You Are? seems to be dented by Bouquet of Barbed Wire, which did well. Dragon's Den held up, which'll please BBC2. The Gadget Show also performed for Five.

Channel 4's bizarre scheduling cost them slightly - as other have said why not run Big Brother related programming together?

The less said about the scheduling of 74 Degrees North the better IMO. Why put a one off in the coveted X Factor slot - give it to a series that could do with lifting.

I'm not sure... S2 was hitting 1.3m and that was after S1 was getting 300,000, now with all this advertising (more than S2 was advertised) thats maybe why.

It's getting the exact same amount of promotion as last year. It's not the kind of thing to keep rising, it will just stay around 1m-1.5m.

This is supposedly their third year at sixth form, surely it's a joke if it goes further.

I cant see why people are saying ITV will be happy with that either.

Considering all the costs involved with creating Daybreak the reward seems very little. The small increase can be put down to curiousity from Breakfast viewers, Radio 1 and 2 listeners. When the curiousity factor has gone it could be back to GMTV levels.

Its far from terrible but also far from good.
