BTW, how do you see what Shabby "likes"? I thought one of the features of Facebook was that if one of your friends "likes" something, you get something to tell you that they like it; but I never see anything like that. (Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?)
I get e-mail about some Facebook things, but I can't work out why it sends me mail about those things in particular.
It's all very confusing.

Friends' 'likes' should appear on your news feed (the default page) on Facebook.

... and I may have figured out why I wasn't seeing them.On the same line as the words "News Feed", but over on the right, it says "Top News" and "Most Recent". I've always had "Top News" selected (and didn't even notice there was an option). It looks like "likes" aren't ever(?) "top", for some reason.
This is the sort of thing that makes me dislike Facebook. It is so hard to figure out what information will appear where (and who will be able to see it).
Top News is a relatively new thing on FB. It shows you the most popular posts in terms of likes and comments; so, as you cannot 'like' or comment on someone's 'like', it will rarely if ever appear at the top. You may find your news feed is sorted by Top News next time you log in as it seems to default to this.
You can set 'who sees what' in the Privacy Settings. Click on Account in the top right corner.

So I guess the two things could well be related.

Sometimes when the weight of forum opinion is against our favourite HM I think defending them can be counterproductive - a thread that may have slipped off the front page in moments is bumped drawing even more attention to it. I can't tell you the times I've typed a defensive reply only to think better of it and delete it. Maybe I'm too like the Cowardly Lion?
Having said that, I really admire FM's who defend their chosen HM against any and all attacks - you know who you are, you brave person you!
