What is it that makes you like an artist?
What appeals to you in an artist today and as a result you end up becoming a of said artist.
For me it's BIG vocals, by female singers. The louder and longer they have belt and project their voice the better for me. Both that and plenty of ballads and tracks showing off their vocals. ![]() People like Mariah, Whitney, Xtina, Leona etc. I find I'm not usually interested in people who can't sing. So they're the type of singers I'll rave over and follow until I die. ![]() sry if this has been done before

I'm not really a fan of artists but more a fan of music. If I like a song and I connect with it on some level, I will buy it. I don't care if the person wrote the song themselves or someone else did and I could care even less about their personal lives.
I would never buy an album just because it's by a specific artist and artists who go on and on about the creative process just bore me to tears. So you are good at your job. Big deal. Lots of people are good at their jobs but don't bang on about it all the time. |

I have more respect for an artists who writes their own stuff and plays their own instruments, hence why I prefer bands to solo artists, but there are some really talented solo artists out there. Also, if they have b-sides to their singles, rather than just countless, boring remixes, I respect them a lot more, as they've put in that extra bit of effort.
People with big vocals and ballads leave me cold. |

It depends on the type of music it is, the mood I'm in, lots of things for me.
I like my favourite band purely for the singing - their main singer just has an incredible pop voice, whether people like what they do or not, he is so good at what he does. They are starting to write more of their own songs and to do more of their own vocal arrangements, and I'm almost 'proud' of them for that, as silly as it sounds. I like them because I've grown up with them since I was maybe 11 or 12 years old, and they remind me of happy times. They're just happy innocent pop, and I love them for it. I love the way singers sing particular words, I can love a song just for that. Like I love Westlife's 'Where We Are' partly because of the way Shane Filan sings the words 'storm' and 'hurricane', the way Will Young sings 'fire' in 'Light My Fire' and the way Eminem does one of the lines of 'Business'. With rock music it's more about the guitars etc obviously, I like certain ways guitars sound - although again I like more of the mainstream stuff (e.g. 'Sweet Child...', the end of 'November Rain', etc). But yes. Different artists different reasons. But lyrics, singing, music, memories, etc. |

There are a number of things which makes me like an artist.
First and foremost, I like artists who do what they do because they genuinely enjoy what they do. Even though fame will inevitably be a part of their lives, I like those artists who don't become too big for their boots, do not change their personas from the period before they became successful (preferably a grounded persona) and just enjoy making music. I like artists who are good at what they do which is a given. And I prefer artists who have an input in the songwriting whether wholly or as part of a group of writers as then I can tell the talent and, more importantly, the effort is there to make music. |

As long as the music is good I'll listen but I prefer them to write their own songs and not to have their head stuck up their own arse, not too much to ask really

How they sound
Sounds a bit of a contrived answer but really that's all there is to it. |

My favourite artists tend to include all or most of these elements:
Good music - beautiful, unusual chord changes, catchy hooks, good production. I tend to favour synth/disco/pop based music but like different kinds. Good lyrics - Lyrics can be good for so many different reasons. I like lyrics that are slightly unusual and clever, that explain feelings well, that tell stories, invent characters or make interesting observations about the world. I also like lyrics that are pure pop - just silly or random or sometimes just simple and sincere if they're done well. Those sorts of lyrics are very underrated and I think much harder to write well than lots of people realise. Good singing voice - I like different sorts of voices but my favourite are soft, conversational and have a lot of atmosphere and character and I generally favour male voices. don't usually like the kind of "professional," powerful singing (plus vocal acrobatics etc) that's fashionable at the moment, for female singers particularly. Way too music emphasis is put on sterile professionalism in singing over substance and it really annoys me. Originality - Artists who think about what they do from different perspectives and try to be original and develop their style are always better. Good personality - I like artists who are intelligent with interesting, fun personalities and who are willing to talk about their music and themselves to an extent. Non snobby with an appreciation of pop music - I don't like people who are pretentious and try to be "cool," They are usually the most boring. Artists who are completely happy to be unfashionable, take influences from anywhere and everywhere including mainstream chart music and do things their own way are much better. Good visual presentation - Presentation is important, pop has never been "just about the music." I like artists who have their own unique visual style in terms of dress sense, art work, stage sets etc. I particularly like it if it is original, fun, interesting, colourful, beautiful or stylish. Talented musicians (or have talented musicians behind them eg. Xenomania who write for Girls Aloud etc) - I do usually prefer artists who write their music themselves but I can still like them if they don't as well. Wow, I've written a lot! Sorry about that, haha ![]()

I like people with quite distinguishable voices, though I will listen to someone with an average voice if their music is good.
Also, this partly ties in with having a distinguishable voice, but I like it when you hear a song by the artist that you have never heard before and you straight away know who it is. I also have more respect for artists who write their own songs and play their own instruments, so I am more likely to listen to them. |

I get rather irritated by the use of the word "artist" in this context, when people basically just mean "singer" or "pop star".
Some singers may also at the same time be artists but many of the people mentioned in this thread up to now are not artists by any sensible definition of the word. For me an artist creates, for the love of it. An artist would be making music in their garage if they weren't doing it for a living. Someone can be an utterly wonderfull singer, or musician but not be an artist. So yes, Leona Lewis has a great voice, is talented, has carisma but she is not an artist she is a proffesional singer. (I don't mean to pick on wee Leona Lewis, I just picked someone out of thin air to use as an example) Anyway, rant over. Carry on. |

If the songs are good, then i like an artist
I find artists i like a lot more are songwriters, down to earth "not stuck up their own backside type artists. I can't be doing with artists slagging others off, i mean we all have our own opinion but they do it so it can get in the paper and that artist can see it. You only have to say "not really fond of so-so but i'll leave it at that" |

For me the music is the main thing
then its the lyrics then the vocals I couldn't care less if someone has an amazing voice, if the music sounds generic and the lyrics cliche and unoriginal then I won't be interested |

Being able to relate to a lyric/song.
Likeability also comes into it. I'm always disapointed when I hear of 'diva behaviour.' Good vocal is a plus and emotion in their voice. If it is a band, chemistry also. It's always good to see that they genuinely get on. |

For me it's those with a depth and pure artistry in what they do. They can be innovative, enetertaining, engaging and intriguing.
My all time favourtie artists/musicians are; Madonna,Marvin Gaye,Fleetwood Mac,Janelle Monae,Rihanna,Britney Spears,Christina Aguilera,Janet Jackson,Bjork,The Rolling Stones,Florence & The Machine,No Doubt/Gwen Stefani,The XX,Hurts and Sly & The Family Stone. so with that i love those who can really direct themselves towards the listener and really be against the grain and have a voice that can attatch a message and convey raw emotion and high energy in their performances. I don't like generic pop, heavy mainstream music played to death,i don't follow trends(oooh this person IS cool you MUST like them etc.) I love who i love and that's final and the artists i mentioned earlier i will always love! Madonna will always be my favourite female artist, Marvin Gaye will always be my favourite male artist and Fleetwood Mac and Sly & The Family Stone will be my all time favourite bands! Florence,Rihanna,Britney,Janelle and Christina will be my favourite contemporary artists. And i do love myself some Janet Jackson and Bjork! |
