This is from another thread:

OK - Sony TV's have CEC, which is an HDMI control system - among other things it does auto-switching for the HDMI inputs.
I've just had a Sony 32RX403 installed, alongside my virginmedia V+ box and a DVD player.. The TV doesn't auto-switch - if I switch the V+ box out of or into standby, I have to press the "inputs" button and select HDMI or TV respectively.

Does the 403 have auto-switch? Is it possible to switch it on and off?

I've had a look through the i-manual, but there's a lot to take in at once. Obviously it's not a problem, just a nuisance.

It requires a CEC device at the other end, V+ certainly isn't one, and I doubt any DVD player is? - what is though, is a recent Sony BluRay player.

So you don't have any suitable devices.

Unless the connected HDMI devices conform to CEC they won't - I'm pretty certain that the V+ (like SkyHD) doesn't. I'd be surprised if the DVD player did but it might be worth a try. Turn the player on and press the sync button on your remote, (I assume you meant 32EX403,) and see what happens.

The only exception seems to be Panasonic TVs. For several years their HDMI1 input will sense an active HDMI signal and switch to it. So Panny users with SkyHD,V+ or any HDMI device will get auto-switching I'm surprised other manufacturers haven't done the same since it seems quite a trivial feature to implement

When I first started using HDMI I was simply gobsmacked that it didn't auto switch. What a thing to leave out of a newly designed connector!! I hope the genius that forgot that one was fired ...

You're rather missing the point - HDMI was Amercian - they never had SCART, so have never had any kind of auto-switching.

If it had been a European design, you can be confident it would have had auto-switching from day one.

My brother's Samsung TV will auto-switch to his PS3 (HDMI) if he switches off his Sky box (Scart). My Sony just sits there with no signal.

On my Panasonic tv I have the V+ into input 1 , Panasonic Bluray into input 2 and PS3 into input 3.

All 3 auto switch although as another poster points out the V+ will only auto switch on input 1 , but the other 2 devices aswell as my Pioneer dvd recorder all feature HDMI Control and with this activated auto switching works on any input .

HDMI Control is only available on the PS3 slim , it's not a feature of the earlier bulky PS3 units

I tried the "sync" but no joy. First I tried to do the settings via the "home" key - nothing listed. Then I tried the sync button on the remote - no suitable devices.

Googling, I found that the sync only works with other Sony machines, and not even all of those, which is why my Sony DVD player didn't show up.

Not to worry, it's not that big a effort to press three keys.

Just as I said

You don't have any CEC devices.

As snotrageater mentioned, the later PS3's do CEC, Panasonic are the other originator of CEC, and various other makes do it now as well.

Thanks. That explains a lot

To be fair, even if the general American public have never experienced auto-switching, I would have expected the designers of the HDMI protocol to be aware of all existing technologies including SCART and it's auto switching capability. It's still a spectacular oversight.

Americans generally aren't aware of anything but themselves!

They did have the foresight to incorporate the space to allow the CEC system from Sony/Panasonic.

CEC stuff is generally HDMI 1.3 and upward and should (but not in all cases) work with different manufactures kit.

If you really want some auto switching invest in a Harmony remote, most HDTVs will have discrete codes so you can make simple macros that power on your TV, power on your cable/sat box and switch to the right input.
