Just a little experiment of mine that I thought of when reading the 'Controversial Music Opinions' thread. It seems that quite a lot of pop fans view metal as music which is depressing, noisy and 'screamy', when in reality, in many cases this is far from true! Metal can produce some of the most melodic music ever, with incredible vocal performances and extremely catchy guitar and bass lines. I've enclosed a couple of YouTube vids below from various bands, and I'd very much like some pop fans to visit this thread and give your honest opinions Please listen to at least some of the songs before making your judgment, not just one! I've converted about 3 of my close friends to heavy-metal, so I'm feeling confident

Megadeth feat Cristinna Scabbia - A Tout Le Monde

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters

Metallica - Enter Sandman

Avenged Sevenfold - Seize The Day

Nightwish - For The Heart I Once Had (Female vocals)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u_HB79QS0g

Within Temptation - Angels (Female vocals)

Angra - Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush Cover with Male operatic vocals!)

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geHLdg_VNww&ob=av2e

Iron Maiden - When The Wild Wind Blows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8iY1ITW0So

I hope you enjoy at least some of these songs, and if not, at the very least I hope it goes some way towards disspelling the myth that metal is all about noise!

This is a brilliant thread.

"run to the hills" has a hook as catchy as anything in the top forty.

A bit of The Drapery Falls wouldn't go amiss.

I will definitely give them a listen, as long as you'll be equally willing to have a "metal fans pop thread" where we can post quality pop music and show you that not all pop music sounds like Lady Gaga or Britney (not that those are bad artists, btw) and that there is really a great deal of good writing in pop, both musically and lyrically.

I try to pride myself on the fact that my music taste is kinda all over the place, I like Miley Cyrus as much as I like Metallica, you know? I think my problem though with alot of metal and "heavy" types of music is the lack of a) being able to relate to the singer and the lyrics (something which, to me, is very important in music) and b) the difficulty to hear and distinguish the actual melody and nuances of the song

Totally! I love a lot of music (apart from what passes as R&B and rap these days in the charts...), but metal is my favourite genre
