The extra fans were a mixture of Newcastle and Sunderland.

I'm actually ashamed of some of the actions from tonight, the game was fantastic, but the pitch invasions were mostly just Newcastle / Sunderland fans wanting to be arseholes.

I do believe our gates will go up in League Two. Not by the increase we've had this weekend, but I think we could at least double them.

Today is not for the bandwagon jumpers though, the Newcastle / Sunderland supporters who decided to "pop along cos it was on the telly". This is for the hard suffering fans who have been going even longer than me, stood by the team through the worst of times and who's hard work is now being rewarded.

HEED ARMY.
I was an extra fan today

Thought grimsby Were disgraceful Throwing flares onto pitch

And i decided not to go on pitch and let the die hard fans have the honour

I have to say I did see a few people who I know are regulars at the International Stadium go on the pitch at the end as well.

I don't see any need to be ashamed at the pitch invasion. From the TV it looked good natured, entirely natural exuberance. Happens up and down the country at this time of year.

I was at the match and I felt that there was no malice or aggression behind the pitch invasion. I personally chose not to, but I can understand why some people did.

In the main stand towards the back, just in front of where the commentary boxes are.

Whilst the Gateshead fans were good natured, I got the impression that the Grimsby supporters could have possibly turned ugly when they threw the flare on the pitch after they equalised.

Am I right in thinking that Gateshead were rather harshly treated when they lost their league status in 1960? Studying their history it seems they regularly finished in the top ten until a few barren years saw them out of the league the first time they had to apply for re-election. Was it their northerly location that was to blame rather than on-the-pitch matters? If so, it would be good to see a decades-long injustice righted.

I'm sorry if I sounded a bit wound up yesterday, I think I just had a head full of mixed emotions. Of course, everyone is welcome at the stadium, regardless of if the Heed is their first team, or they need their Heed examining, sorry, cough, support someone else.

The story I've heard AFBC, is that we were voted out in 1960, mostly due to geographical disagreements. The mostly southern based clubs weren't keen on travelling to the North East.

My Grandad used to be chairman of the Gateshead FC supporters club around about that time, and I remember him telling me about it. He basically said exactly that, that Gateshead were shafted by other clubs in the league who were mostly based in the south. I'm glad that system of re-election does not exist any more. It was about 40 years later that he was discussing it with me, and he still sounded bitter.

We're still not that keen on it to be honest

Could be 3 long trips up to the far North next season in League 2 if you guys join Carlisle and Hartlepool

Good luck to both Gateshead and Cambridge at Wembley.

Well done to St Albans on their promotion to Conference South.

Will play Hemel, Boreham Wood and Wealdstone so a few local games

Geniune question - I thought the Football League did not allow teams with athletics stadiums into the Football League.

Not heard that rule before. I thought the only regulation was a stadium should have a minimum 6,000 capacity with at least 1,000 seats. And Brighton played at The Withdean for a number of years, of course.

What about Brighton's old ground?

I have split loyalties over this one. As someone from the NE (the Wearside end), it would be great to have another team from the region in the league, especially after Darlington's collapse. The challenge for the Heed is to grow their own dedicated fan base rather than just being a second team for SAFC and NUFC supporters.

On the other hand, Cambridge is my local club to where I live now.

Whichever team loses, I hope they go up next season.

Brighton & Hove Albion were already a league club. The rule (I thought) was more strictly applied to teams coming up from the conference.

In the mid 1990s several conference clubs did not win promotion to the league, after winning the conference. Kidderminster 1994 (evenntually winning promotion in 2000, getting relegated in 2005) Macclesfield 1995 (eventually winning promotion in 1997, and getting relegated in 2012) and then Stevenage 1996 (eventually winning promotion in 2010) 3 teams in 3 successive years.

At the time the Football League was more strict with teams coming up to the Football League and amongst other things teams had to play in a "football stadium" and certainly one with an athletics track around it would not be acceptable.

It was only the first and second division clubs which voted, so the travelling didn't even affect them and it wasn't only Southern teams who voted them out, remarkablely Newcastle were one of the teams who didn't vote for them, prefering the team who replaced them Peterborough.

The regulations got a lot stricter starting with the 1993/94 season, as that's when all the Taylor Report recommendations came into full force. On top of that, there was also a rule that clubs had to fully own and play at their own ground, as a result of Maidstone undergoing a financial implosion after they played their home games in Dartford to get into the league, and ended up going bust three years later.

I'm guessing either they relaxed the regulations at some point or non-league clubs started improving their grounds en masse in the late 90s, as apparently every single team in last season's Conference National had a ground that met the Football League criteria, and so did most of the ones in the Conference North and South.
