Is it possible to ask some advice from this specialist in how to best deal with the situation once you are there so that it will be easier for you to persuade her to come with you? I remember someone telling that the best way to connect with her mother in that situation was not to deny her reality (as she had first tried to do) but to go along with it to some extent and offer solutions within the delusion, which made her mum quite happy.

I totally agree with Sad (as usual....) in that of course it has nothing to do with 'pathetic', it's so completely understandable to feel quite helpless just thinking about being in the situation you will find yourself in once you are there and not knowing who might be able to help you.

But it will be okay Bats, I'm sure you will know what to do when the time comes to make a decision.

Yes, that's exactly it. I talked to her own doctor a while ago (who can't do anything until there's a possibility of risk to life and limb... ) and also to some dementia organisations since then, and that'll all one can do. Forcing real reality on people like this simply doesn't work. That's one of the reasons I'm so reluctant to go over - I won't be able to fix anything. She's obviously eating and is healthy enough in every other way, and if I go I'll only be able to stay a few days. I know that I should go, just to have a look at her, but it seems to be a bit of an emotional mountain for me, and the thought of spending a few days with her, in her house, with my only escape a walk in the park... well, so far I haven't managed to book that flight! If she was taken ill, I'd be on the next plane, obviously. Or if she started saying that she wants to come back to the UK, then I'd go and get her. But that's not what's going on right now.

Excuses, excuses...

BG, if your mum had some gastric complaint, or a brain tumour, for example, you wouldn't for one second be contemplating DIY surgery, would you?

So I wouldn't feel bad about getting the Polish specialist involved.

Two problems there - I don't understand the Polish system enough to know for sure what the implications might be if she's judged to be mentally unfit. And the second problem is that as far as I know she's not registered with a doctor over there. If she is, she's forgotten who and where. And there's very little chance that she'll agree that there's something up and that she needs to find someone. And even if she agreed (and she really won't), she'd forget again. She had 30 days to activate her new banker's card by either calling one of the numbers on it or by using it in the Warsaw branch of her bank. She couldn't manage that, but would try to use it without the activation. She'd then call me to say why wasn't her card working. So we had the same conversation over and over again about what she needed to do... Then the bank cancelled it. I've sorted out a new one now and got her to tell me her pin and it's gone off to her, activated. She'll be fine with it now. It's anything over and above her routine that seems impossible, and getting registered with a doctor would fall into that category. (and I also think she'll be unable to travel back on her own, once she says she wants to come back)

I've got a much better chance of sorting something out here. I used to be with the same GP practice so I know quite a few of the doctors and they've already said that if I can get her to an appointment they'll allow me to go in with her to explain what's up.

But she says she doesn't want to come back at the moment...

It's like trying to nail jelly to the wall.

Thanks snowy. I will shut up about it soon, it's just all I can think about at the moment.

No-one's asking you to stop unloading on us.

Maybe there's a Polish forum out there with helpful peeps you can ask?

Thanks KJ.

Those web pages confirm what I already know (as in don't expect much help!) but I might give that Warsaw lot a ring tomorrow, just to see if they can add anything new. I've a feeling that, like here, she'd have to agree to someone helping her and she simply won't do that.

*waves guiltily*

Am still here, honest! Reading even when I'm not typing. For the last few nights it's been a choice between internets and sleep, and aleep's been winning!

(((((((((((((batty)))))))))))))))))) - ackshully, if she's not physically ill and there's nothing you can do then perhaps you shouldn't go tearing over there?
Hope the contact details help somehow.

And do, please, keep unloading

I can do really grumpy .... and Batty, keep it coming because it's making my work related grumps seem trivial, therefore relieving stress

A problem shared means it should also relieve your stress to offload a bit = win win all round. So don't shut up.

It's been a bloody long day and it's not over yet... *sigh*

I'm going to do a grrr just to join in, because my day's been quite nice really. I've managed to stay away from the phone and got in a long and slightly muddy bike ride, which was really good fun.

Sorry to hear you guys are grumpy. (((gorgeous grumpsters)))

Make their favourite food and tell them they can't have any while you and Mr Sad polish it all off.
