She's very interesting in that I think she can improve even further. No way did she peak in that first audition.I could see her top that performance if she was to make it through to the live shows.

I've just seen a YT vid of her singing You'll Never Walk Alone and I'm afraid she isn't living up to the expectation I had of her last night

That was two years ago though and sounds like it is a studio version and not live.

You'll Never Walk Alone isn't that impressive It's OK I guess but not as good as the audition.
Is she mixing English and Irish in the song?

Yes,she's singing 'Siul leat' which means 'walk on' in Irish. The programme went out on Irish language channel TG4.

I think it's a studio version we're listening to here, and not a very good one.

Still early days, but Mary is the bookies' favourite to win at the moment.

(Discounting Gamu, but her odds reflect bets placed by punters before she became the media poster girl for Auto-Tune, and there's been no market movement towards her all week.)

I checked the betting sites because I supposed that The Reason would be the favourites now. The interest in Mary is a good sign. I sense a dogged determination in her that's likely to become apparent over the course of the series, and win over a lot of fans. She chose a very difficult song and carried it off, but because it is a powerhouse number without a lot of room for nuance I think some are jumping to the conclusion that she lacks subtlety as a singer. My guess is that she'll prove herself accomplished across a wide-ranging repertoire.

I didn't think much at the start of her performance but once she got going I was impressed. Also she seems very down to earth and I think she would appeal to a wide variety of people. And most importantly she has really impressed the judges.

They said on radio in Ireland last week so she was away and had made it to the judges house stage.

She had a powerful voice, I hope she does well, but I don't think she'll win. Traditionally the younger people always win XF, overs never stand a chance.

If Simon has the overs, she has no chance of making it to the live shows. I am not clear how much control he would have over the overs if it wasn't his category but would not be suprised if he has a veto.

Agree that she probably hasn't much chance of winning, but it's great to see a singer in her 50s who is a contender and who is making headlines : there have been way too many nondescript 16-22 year olds over the years who were forgotten the moment they left the show.

Exactly. If she can do nuance and emotion, it would have shown there. It didn't. But, presumably she'll have some good coaching in the "judges house" and they'll be able to bring out more subtlety if it's there.

That is a studio version on that Youtube video though and a very badly produced one at that.

I wouldn't pay much attention to anything that happened on that original show.It was made on a budget of about £100 and the viewing figures were miniscule....probably 1% of the Irish TV audience would have seen it.

It was interesting seeing Mary in the boot camp preview footage on Sunday night. She was listening very intently to the person advising her. I have a feeling that her maturity compared to the other contestants is going to prove an asset in coping with the stress of the live shows, assuming the rumours are true that she gets through. The older we get, the more we realise how little we know. She's in a good position to benefit fully from the opportunity of working with seasoned professionals in the music business.

Mary could be a surprise package in this series. She has received very little publicity in the UK press which can only help her,as expectations of her chances are low.

The one thing really going for her is her voice : there are no question marks over her ability to deliver on the big stage.

I liked Mary's comment towards the end of the programme on Sunday about being part of a big group of misfits, but ones with a lot of talent.

She has a generous spirit as well as a good voice. It's a very appealing quality and I think it will help win fans for her.

I like her humour as well : "I didn't want to let that Irish fella down on the panel" and calling Dermot "Dermy-wermy"

She looks like she's a real character and may turn out to be one of the most likeable people on the show.

Mary is one classy, classy performer...even when disadvantaged, she gives it her all, doesn't sit moaning etc. The show needs more like her. Her voice is freaking awesome too!!

Hope she gets through, but yeah...missing her words again could prove really costly!

Mary came across as more likeable than ever tonight. Shame about the forgotten lyrics but considering the competition in her category and the strength of her voice I can't imagine her not getting through.

You're so right, I thought she handled her blip really well with no hissy fits unlike some people.
Does it really matter that much, surely every singer does it sometime, shows shes human
She is as you say a classy performer & she's a real lady

I think Louis will need to choose her songs very carefully as I'm not convinced Coldplay suited her.He is caught between not wanting to make her sound too old fashioned by giving her loads of Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones numbers but he needs to make sure he doesn't give her stuff that doesn't entirely suit her either.I think she'll do well on the live shows : I get the impression many people have written her off and they may be surprised to discover she's a better singer than they imagine.
