Hitachi HDR165 OAD

29-08-2010
My Hitachi HDR165 updated this morning with V3.4. I'm not sure why it didn't update on Saturday morning as the machine was in standby overnight and not recording anything.

The only difference I can see at first glance from v2.6 is that the 'Menu' now says 'Setup & Retune' (rather than just 'Setup'), and the 'Installation' option now says 'Installation & Retune'.

My question is: do I need to do anything else, like a 'reset to defaults' which you have to do when the Humax gets an update?

Thanks.

I don't know the official line on this, but it may be a good idea to perform a first time installation especially if you have lots of timers set. This will clear out all your timers as well as rescanning channels, etc. I only suggest this as this version contains some changes in the way that timers are set by the internal booking system - for example, there should be less chance of getting duplicate recordings now - if you delete a recording, any following repeat of that episode is no longer recorded. BTW, it is not enough to delete timers manually via the timers list, as this doesn't necessary erase the underlying timer data (i.e. it is not unusual for timers to reappear after you have deleted them!).

One of the main reasons for this update was that earlier versions did not always wake up from low power standby to make recordings, but with v3.4 it is safe to leave low power mode enabled without recordings being missed.

Thanks. I've done a first time installation to be on the safe side.

I just noticed the update this morning, when I went into the Menu. It seems that the slowness bringing up the Guide has been sorted. Very pleased. But now they've sorted out the multitasking there is no need to mute the sound when going into Guide

Will any of the other T835's be receiving this OAD or is it just the Hitachi's.

The OAD is being repeated right now, btw, and over the weekend. AFAIK, contrary to the DTG site, the update is not just for the Hitachi units - there are in fact two different T835 OADs being broadcast concurrently. Assuming the Hitachi models are sharing the same OAD, the other OAD must be for another brand (Bush / Vestel UK brands maybe). My box updated last weekend and it is not a Hitachi.

Interested to know if the Asda Luxor will update as I know someone who has one so want to make sure they don't miss it as there still on v0.8.

As long as they have automatic updates enabled, it should update overnight. It may be worth trying a manual update check too (although this didn't work for me).

Yes, although it currently isn't being broadcast. Was broadcast last weekend, and will be again this coming Friday and over the weekend. If it didn't pick the update up last weekend, it is probably worth disabling low power mode too as there can be problems with it waking up when it should do (which are fixed in v3.4), which includes the 3am wake up for update checks.

I keep my HDR165 in low power mode to stop the random hard disk spin ups all through the night, and the fact that it probably keeps software glitches at bay. I wish it would start-up quicker, I mean, if it has to "initialise" the hard disk, can't we get the TV picture up in the meantime??? .... and it's just switched from BBC News to E4+1.... and after 5 minutes it switched back! ....time for a switch off at the wall.

Another annoying thing about my PVR. When I want an instant recording, I don't want it to check the programme library to see if the programme has already been recorded (in the case of STV News, they don't do the series link thing, so every edition is considered the same programme (I have complained about this)), just record ASAP!

There's an Over-the-air update this weekend, but it's a repeat of V3.4

Switched on today, it had forgotten all the channels, needed a rescan, therefore lost all my timers too.
