First is there a reset button anywhere on this recorder?
Second when I try to switch it on the only thing to appear in the display is DVD1 and it does not matter what button I press it does the same and that is only for about 10 seconds and it will not switch on so I cannot do a setup, can anyone help this pensioner please.

Sounds like you have been to deep in the menus in that the remote control code and the recorder don't match .

Press "OK" & "1" on the remote for a few seconds to return it to standard remote codes . Or take the batteries out of the remote and press a few random buttons to drain the capacitors , re fit and all should be OK .

Full reset is via the menus but is not normally needed .

I done what you said and the remote went back OK but when I play a recorded program I get a blank screen and a message saying 96 at the bottom and no signal in the middle of the screen. I tried it again with another recorded program and it worked OK.

You now have a reception / tuning problem , re run the auto tuning this will give you all the stations you aerial can give . Check your reception at www.digitaluk.co.uk , don't forget to tick "I am in the aerial installation trade" box this will show you what you should get assuming your roof aerial is OK . Where are you in the UK ?
