Workaround for Humax HDR Fox T2 HDMI issue?
jkevin
31-08-2010
The issue of seeing a blank screen when changing inputs from and then back to the Humax HDR has been mentioned in a number of threads. Unfortunately I'm one of the ones suffering from it.

Rather than visit numerous threads to check for a workaround I thought it might be useful if there was a dedicated thread with a meaningful title where any workarounds could be posted.

Other than switching the unit off and then on again (which can't be done when recording) I've not found a workaround. Has anyone else found one that works?

From my previous posts -

Main problem was the HDMI incompatibility issue with my Sony 820 Amp & Philips 9632 TV.

When I switched to a different I/P on the Amp & back to the Fox I either got a green screen or no picture at all. Same if I switched to the TV's internal tuner & back.

Same when Fox plugged directly into TV.

Nothing except rebooting the Fox would restore the picture, even reseating the HDMI lead to force a fresh handshake didn't work.

Inspired by another post a few days ago I bought a 4 way HDMI switch which also amplifies the signal. It works a treat!!!

I need to boot the Fox HDR from Idle Standby with the TV & Amp switched to it. After that the 4 way switch maintains the connection no matter what I switch the Amp or TV or the 4 way switch to.

If however the Fox is in standby recording (or about to record) then it may or may not work, & if it does work it won't maintain the connection if I switch away.

Just found another workaround.

All my HDMI connections are to the AV receiver with only one HDMI connection from the receiver to the TV. I found that if I switch hdmi source from 1 to 2 (one with no physical connection) on the tv and then return to 1 then after a few seconds the picture and sound from the humax returns.

Humax now have beta firmware which they say fixes the HDMI issues, you just need to contact them to get the firmware sent to you.

Thanks for the info Phil. I've just emailed humax support so hopefully I'll have it today.

It's a shame about this problem as otherwise it's a top notch product. It may be more of an issue for me than some others as I'm continually switching between my Sky HD box and the Humax in order to watch S4C Clirlun (the s4c hd channel).

As a happy 9200 owner of nearly 5 years, I was about to push the button on buy. But then I started reading these reports. The issue is a deal breaker for me - I am not interested in workarounds.

Think I'll email humax and let them know.

HDMI issues are generally caused by the need to use HDCP, an encryption mechanism used over HDMI, the idea is to stop you being able to copy the digital data and prevent piracy. Of course it hasn't and never will prevent piracy, and just means innocent people get problems due to the complexity of it all.

I would have thought the standard definition HDMI PVRs didn't use encryption as it was SD.

I'm sure Humax will sort out the issues soon.

The BETA firmware they have released doesn't seem to help fixing the problem.

What's the issue that's being discussed?
When I switch on my Humax I have to switch to AV to view Humax pictures, it doesn't switch automatically unlike my 9200 with scart, am I doing something wrong?
TV is Panasonic TH-42PX80B.

Where is the info regarding beta firmwares coming from?

I have the PX80 and will be getting the Humax soon -

on the PX80 only HDMI 1 and Scart1 auto switch. I have also noticed that auto switch wont work if you have manually switched from one AV source to another.

I've found that switching the V-format (resolution) gets the picture back. If you have a Harmony remote, you can program it to press the V-format button 5 times when you select the "Watch Humax" activity. This returns the resolution to the same setting (that you have it set to) but forces a renegotiation with the HDMI interface.

If you don't have a Harmony remote press the V-format button 5 times in rapid succession.

Incidentally, I have the latest beta firmware, which doesn't fix it for me.

Is this problem happening on boxes on a switcher or AV amplifier, or is it all types of connection set-ups- eg. direct to tv??

Mine will be going to a Yamaha Amp and then to the TV via a shared HDMI output from the amp. So far I have mainly seen this issue with people on Denon and Sony amps.

I have an Octava 3 Inputs to 4 outputs HDMI switcher.

It happens on this.

To get it back I put it back into standby.

If that fails then I switch resolutions until it comes back

I have both a Sky HD box and Sony HDD attached & both of these work no problem.

I also have the latest beta firmware installed.

Mine's connected directly, not via my amp or a switcher

Yep, and Humax seem very slow to respond to emails. BTW this handshaking has been a problem AFAIK on the none recording version for over a year, which still has not been sorted.

I would try downgrading back to the original firmware if this worked okay. They are still working on the HDMI issues so let them know you are still having issues with the latest BETA and let them know make and model of TV.

Download the original version from http://beta.humaxonline.co.uk/downlo...edirects=0&d=1

We have no problems with the older or BETA firmware with HDMI on Panasonic TV.

For most people it seems okay, just some incompatibilities, a lot of which is due to the HDCP encryption used to stop pirates getting hold of digital copies, which it doesn't of course but honest people just get problems as it is way more complicated then just transmitting a picture over a digital connection than it should be
