Coronation Street- Why Do They Show Cololured Pegs On A Washing Line at End Of Part 1

Before the revamp they used to show a weed growing inbetween the cobbles!

What the hell are they thinking?

It's to show what the North is like, that has always been the theme of Corrie's presentation

Of course, but its a staple of the North, the pegs in the backyard ect.

I'm not so sure that we should be generalising 'the North' as a whole. There a plenty of places in the north of England that don't have weeds in a back yard and coloured pegs hanging loosely off a washing line. The original premise of Corrie was that it was a kitchen-sink drama, and should focus on the ordinary people going about their business. It involved social realism (on this occasion in the north west of England, in a small cobbled street) and as such these people have small yards with weeds / washing lines with pegs on etc. It all adds to the social realism of Corrie being grimy and working class - a bit like having rolling moors and lambs for Emmerdale's break bumpers representing them as a bit of a countryside / farming soap.

If they are going to portray the north then they should include kilts and bagpipes.

Too far north. Yorkshire pud and t'Hovis lad on a bicycle? 'By 'eck, them barm cakes were grand!'

Maybe they're just trying to hint at working class back yards in general, and not northern back yards in particular.

Exactly. People seem to forget that there are three other countries in the UK so it is silly to talk about the north and the south without specifying whether talking about the entire country (the UK) or one of the countries therein.

It's to show that the north can adapt to advanced technology ... they're getting rid of the old wooden pegs, and gradually taking on the challenge of the new, high tech, plastic coloured ones.

This is in anticipation of characters about to display their dirty linen in public!
