The feature is available in Europe and I have been told that if you have access to TV5 (on Sky) you can get it to work for french TV, i.e. show the Analogue French TV schedule. |

I found it worked to some extent on Thomson TV's - (assuming it's the same feature I saw) - when activated on analogue TV, it would (eventually) display what programs are coming up over the next 24 hours... it used the text TV pages to find the data and as a result was just as slow as using text.
It also allowed compatible vcr's to be programmed simply... you'd click on 'TV Guide' on the TV remote, wait to view the upcoming programmes then you could click to record and the VCR was programmed. It worked well and was very simple. NexTView seems like a feature that's almost redundant these days, what with digital TV guides and such like. |

Thanks for the info guy's, it kinda annoy's me that there seems to be more and more features that are gimmicky and not really usable.
Now a lot of DVD-HDD recorders like the fancy Panasonic DMR-E95H have a "TV Guide On-Screen Electronic Program Guide" which are new this year to Panasonic’s line of DIGA DVD Recorders, but will it work over here..... what other handy stuff do we have that doesn't work ... video+ PDC

Im trying to get my Thomson VCR to record programs off of my Thomson Sky Digibox via the "nexTView" feature.
The sky digibox manual say's that when i set a reminder in the Sky EPG, and press the red button, it sets an "AutoView" reminder. - this turns the digibox on from stand-by, and changes the channel to the program you set the reminder for. **IMPORTANT BIT** it also say's if i have a compatable VCR, it will turn that on and tell the VCR to start recording the program. Now to me, it seems an "autoview" reminder to tell the VCR to start recording, is just the latest version on the "nexTView" feature. Considering i have both a Thomson VCR and Thomson digibox, i thought it would be compatable, and i would have a Sky+ type set up using the VCR. I have read on these forums a few times, that people have done this.- set autoview reminders, which wakes up their VCR's to start recording. I have also read somewhere that i need to turn on the "external" something?? for this to be possible.? Can anyone help me with this? as i'm sure im doing something wrong, and my VCR is a top model, 6 heads pdc videoplus deluxe satellite control ntsc and all the rest, im sure my VCR is compatable. so am i doin something wrong?? PLEASE HELP!!??!!??! |

I don't think Sky digiboxes (any brand) support NexTView... the auto switching feature is just a simple signal via the scart lead and I don't think it's technically part of the NexTView feature.....
As far as I can tell, the reminder set on Sky should send out a signal via the Sky digibox VCH scart, this should wake up the video (it must be in standby) and start it recording via that scart socket. Shame that the VCR scart on Sky boxes doesn't output RGB which you might want if recording onto DVD ram ( I assume DVD recorders can record RGB signals?) NexTView (smartlink and other names) is sort of an out of date idea nowadays..... it was really supposed to improve analogue transmission recordings... shame they invented it as digital came along! - same with PDC really..... Some of the features it supports are ok... but features like the TV guide via teletext to program the video are so slow to use that it's much quicker to manually program or use V+ |

Oh right, cleared it up a bit for me, i did go through the Argos book to see if those VCR's have anything similar, and they mostly have the "smartlink" features.
So it looks like there may be a pin out on my scart or somthing... i'll keep trying until i cant take it anymore lol |

On many equipment you must use a certain scart sockets - not all sockets are wired up for NexTVview so check with the manual
I know on some Panasonic TVs only AV2 works..... |

PLEASE HELP!!??!!??! EXT LINK 1 by which the VCR will receive a control signal from the Sky Digibox via the AV.Link/nextTVviewLink on Pin 10 of the Digibox VCR SCART to start and stop recording. EXT LINK 2 which sends a control signal via Pin 8 of the Digibox VCR SCART to start and stop the VCR recording for equipment that does not support AV.Link functions. A fully wired SCART lead is also required. Your VCR Operating Instructions will tell you if your VCR supports External Link and how to use it. |

Right, now i understand.
My VCR has a dedicated VCR or Satellite SCART socket. it's blue, and say's it is compatable, and i have a fully loaded SCART socket all pins - whether all the pins are wired up is another matter, but i will swap around cables to see what happens. p.s ... you say both the Digibox and VCR must be in stand-by. ? i'll give it a go. |

The Blue SCART socket on your VCR indicates that Pins 10, 12 and 14 are not connected.
This means that the VCR cannot make use of any AV.Link facility on Pin 10. Your VCR can only use Pin 8 switching, if the VCR is compatible. There will be a button or a menu setting on the VCR that allows you to enable the External Link function. |

Controlling VCR with SkyBox
I have just been given a pre-1996 Philips top-end VCR. With the help of the useful comments in this thread, I have amazed myself by linking the autoview feature on Sky TV guide via Scart to the VCR, which has a facility for automatic recording from a satellite receiver. It's a great way to record from a basic Sky box - and I am not sure that all PVRs would be able to do that!
