To be fair, the Galaxy Tab has a lot more external connectors built into it and the 3G model is about the same price as the Wifi only iPad.

you are the first person I've heard saying anything nice about the Creative or Archos devices. And battery life IS the real factor here.
The Archos is the only large tablet with a decent weight advantage over a netbook yet has better battery life than the Macbook Air.
Maybe a battery extension on the Archos will give 20 hours battery yet only at the weight on the iPad.

An expansys review states "I guess I might be painting a negative picture of this device, but I would rate it better than an Ipad... especially when 2.2 becomes available... and its half the price of the equivilant... has USB ports, and SD slot which the Ipad doesent."

Plenty of negatives too in that balanced review. Marketplace is loaded easy like most of them.

Your prices are wrong - £499 for the Galaxy tab. £429 for the wifi only iPad, £529 for the 3G/Wifi iPad.

With the iPad you get an OS designed for the purpose, Android really isn't ready for tablet work yet - and thats what Google have said ... repeatedly.

Whilst I'm not a fan of the iPad, I can see its place in the home - the Galaxy tab could have a place if it wasn't so chronically overpriced. At its current pricing its head to head with the iPad, which is a vastly superior product.

Just seen the dimensions.

It's only slightly smaller than my Asus Eee PC Netbook.

Not what I'd call "pocket size"

It is a neat device but they missed my custom by overpricing the thing .

Browsing the web?

The big iPod is crippled in so many places. The rushed design meant removing nearly all function. No doubt in the rush to grab quick bucks in the market.

Supposedly the Google Chrome tablet arrives on the 26th. That a main reason Google are downplaying these massive Android phones.

The iPad allegedly was in the planning stages before the iPhone. Hardly rushed. It's not as if Apple had competition at the time. Unlike current tablet makers.

The screen is too small, the software is buggy, it looks cheap and nasty for a start.

I would really like a samsung galaxy tab but it is just to much money for me at the moment, but i have noticed on the pcworld and dixons website it has already been reduced by 30 quid, so hopefully it will keep on dropping in price, or i might end up going for the archos or the advent vega instead.

The screen is too small,
Too small for you. The iPhone screen is even smaller!

"the software is buggy, "
Still you never explained what you found while using it.

"it looks cheap and nasty for a start."

That's a standard term of abuse for most Apple competitors.

It is certainly overpriced for what could turn into a very good car gadget.
Bizarrely the iPad 'non entertainment media shape' is better for GPS with a squarer screen almost always best.

Though you forgot to mention that you're only quoting the cheapest iPads. None of which have a slot for SD cards. The others are significantly more expensive.

For those interested the 7" POV 4GB Mobii is now in stock in many places.

It's Arm 11 so reasonable. The last I heard was that turning on the HDMI TV output causes glitches when playing 1080p files
I'm not sure if its the same now it has Android 2.1
£129 at SVP certainly makes it the best by far at that price.

Not everyone needs an SD slot, but thats typically for taking images off your camera, isn't it? I would have personally preferred USB OTG support, but pretty sure that won't happen with the iPad for a long time (if ever), and not sure its currently supported or planned for Android.

The iPad camera connection kit allows connection to SD cards and USB devices, so its considerably more flexible for those that need the facility.

Dixons had an ipad, a galaxy tab and archos 70 side by side when I went in so I had a play about with them. The Ipad had a slightly nicer finish but I dont think the tab is anywhere near "cheap and nasty". I think it was the Archos that surprised me most though given its price. The screen was surprisingly good and comparable to the tab in that lighting.

I was very tempted to buy the Archos then but I really want the 10inch version.

Dixons?

I thought it was fully defunct apart from the online portal.

Dixons still operate in the UK as Dixons Travel (formerly Dixons Tax Free) in most airports.

2 years since my last trip abroad. Although I half guessed the answer whilst posting my question.

I think they did the name change (from Tax Free to Travel) because they couldn't offer VAT free prices any more. Beforehand, you could buy kit with the VAT knocked off - quite a saving when one spends on a camcorder etc. The measly saving on an iPad for example, is barely enough to cover the cost of even the cheapest accessories.

I doubt anyone makes that much profit on the iPad in that stores still jump through hoops to sell Apple.

So more hints on iPad 2 in the new year. With other reports of them using fibre glass reinforced plastic to reduce weight I do suspect it will be an 8" complimentary device selling either at the same price.(so as not to irritate the version 1 buyers)
Target weight therefore has to 0.34 KG which is exactly 50% of its bigger brother and easy headline material.

Slightly different weight saving tactics to the revolutionary Archos 101.

Oh the irony...

So basically it will be plastic...like the Galaxy S which got berated by 'fanboys' for feeling cheap. Only when Apple use it, it will be the 8th wonder of the world.

And the 8" screen - so 1" bigger than 7 which again 'fanboys' shout out how small that is...

Sheeesh!

Anyway I picked up the Galaxy Tab in a T-mobile shop yesterday. Must say it felt pretty good in the hand with plenty of sockets for cards etc. Shame I didn't have time to see it working. But I'm quite happy with the Galaxy phone at the moment.
