I think the Bill must be one of the most under appreciated shows on the TV. Correct me if I'm wrong but it must surely be Britain's second longest running soap and it is absolutely brilliant. No other soap has that much action and that good acting.

Its not the 2nd longest running as far as I know it would come in fourth behind Corrie, Deadenders and Emmerdale.

On the whole I think its a great programme with the obvious exception of the Apeman storyline, (but then again theres a thread running about him)

EastEnders started in 1985 didn't it, so isn't even 20 yet. But The Bill celebrated its 20th anniversary last year so The Bill is older, and a Lot better IMO

I forgot about Emmerdale. But the Bill is the 3rd longest running soap.

I think the Bill can be brilliant sometimes, better than any other show on TV. Then again sometimes it can be downright awful, and thats happened a lot more since once certain character joined up about a year or so ago...

You're right about The Bill being long running, but don't forget it wasn't always a soap: when it first started as an hour show, and even when it first became a half hour show it was a police drama.

The writers were even instructed to keep the character's personal relationships, especially those outside the station in the background and concentrate on the crime stories. (I'm old enough to remember it from the start!)

It's now gone the other way, and it's no longer a police drama, but a soap which happens to be set in a police station. Now the personal lives are important, and the actual crimes seem less so.

Is it an improvement, I don't feel so, I much preferred the "old" Bill, but it does seem to have got better ratings after going "soap".

I'm surprised there hasn't been more peple posting in this thread, The Bill is the best soap on TV right now (apart from one **** in a police uniform).

You were right, the original creator of The Bill insisted the private lives stay out of the programme, but it began to get to the point of change or die.

The Bill chose to change and here it is, back at the top. I used to know people involved in the programme when the huge decision was beginning to loom (late nineties) and at one point The BIll nearly died of old age at 15 - thank God it didn't

Leave Gabriel Alone!

The Bill is not as good as it used to be but I still find myself watching it avidly.
I've been watching it on UKTVGold. They're currently showing the episodes from early-mid 2003 with Jesse Birdsall featuring as Ron Gregory.
I must admit I seem to be enjoying them more the second time around.

I've watched The Bill, on and off, since 1983. It was good to see 'The Woodentops' pilot episode repeated last year on ITV 2 - amazing how much has changed!
I personally hate the new 'soap style' Bill. It used to pride itself in NOT being a soap opera, and had very strong, well plotted single episode storylines. I am not interested in who is sh****ng who.
I have caught some of last years eps on UK Gold recently, and they had me gripped, but started watching again on ITV 1 had me switching over I'm afraid. Will try again in a few months.

It's the one TV programme I never miss. Although it's not a brill as it used to be I still find myself rushing home to see it.
