This little beauty from Sonos will connect straight to a set of speakers and give you access to all your music from your pc as well as internet radio, napster, lastFM, Deezer & Wolfgangs Vault.
Or this one has it's own speaker/amp system instead http://www.sonos.co.uk/products/zone...&LangType=2057

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch these can be used as the remote controls. You will also need a (http://www.sonos.co.uk/products/zone...&LangType=2057) hard wired to your network as the starting point for the wireless mesh that the system sets up.

Once you start you can just add more rooms as and when you want!

You also have a line in on the unit so you can attach an Ipod or TV if you have a local source to listen to in the kitchen too! Have had them instore for a couple of weeks and think they are awesome. Dead easy to use and work really well.

Direct from a pc, there's D-lan

D-lan audio adaptors are a specific implementation of Homeplug audio, but using cheaper equipment!

As the diagrams I linked to show, you just connect an amp/speakers where you want them.

Unlike the far more expensive Sonos, there's no remote control.

There's also the wireless headphones/speakers option, but these use analogue fm, and are not normally described as "hi fi". Depends whether you have golden ears!

There's also media players, eg D-link

I use a laptop connected to my Onkyo amp, which is fed into the back room using the zone 2 feature. I then use my SE Satio as a remote control.

Works fine although I could do with upgrading to a computer with optical out, probably when I build myself a HTPC in the spring.

Plug it into the wall and into your hifi, add it to you wireless network and off you go.

Integrates nicely with iTunes and again you could use an iPhone/iPod Touch as a remote control.

A videosender is cheap! You could use the audio part only, and most remote controls will work though the reverse channel! However, it's not strictly hi fi, so depends on what sound quality you want.

For remote control sepatately, dedicated infra red extender systems are avaialble, eg:

Take a look at the Logitech Squeezebox family of products, cheaper than the Sonos. Squeezbox Boom would probably fit the bill.
