The casting's looking very pretty. What's the betting that Jackie Earle Haley will be Judge Death *yawn*

"And it has been noted that Judge Dredd will not be taking off his helmet."

Wow. I'm in the minority that liked the Stallone movie. It got an awful lot right and the humour was spot-on, I thought. But the helmet thing...

This is great.

Haven't read 2000AD for years. I quit when Hilary Robinson was writing half the comic. Got a letter off her once. Found it two weeks ago and binned it. God, I hated her stuff.

Hmm. I kinda wish I could go back to that time in my life when 2000AD brightened my week. I don't think it would work now. Maybe 2000AD and a bottle of Southern Comfort...

Not a bad idea that - it says that he's 2m tall - certainly Death used to be shown as being very tall, taller than Dredd if memory serves me correctly.

I did read that Arnold Schwartzenegger was considered for the roleof ole Stoney face but he said he'd much like to play Judge Death instead.

Personally, I'd much rather see Sylvester Stallone reprise his role (yes, Il liked the original) with Gordon Brown as Otto Sump but as for myself, I'd be happy to be Nemesis the WarlocK/a Strontium Dog/a mutie (I wouldn't need much make up for this).

I loved the comics when I was younger, but the film just didn't do it for me. I suppose when reading comics or books you get a pciture in your head as to who would be perfect for the role.

To me there was only ever 1 person to play Dredd and that was Clint Eastwood.

I think the problem with the '95 version was that it was too much about the director's 'vision' instead of being about Dredd. It always strikes me that if you're basing a film on an already fantastical and well-established backstory, if you divert away from it too much, it renders the film pointless. Hence Hammerstein being thrown in, except it wasn't Hammerstein etc.

Hopefully with this reboot they'll stay proportionately true to the source material. To me, Dredd is like Batman - you don't need explanations etc - people know who is and what Mega City One is, so just get on with recreating a classic story with the characters as they were originally intended to be!

I like the idea of Johnny Alpha turning up, but unfortunately thing that Strontium Dog isn't a well known enough story for people to know what'd be going on. Judge Death would work, as would the Sov-block invasion story.... or dare I say it.....

Chopper?

A Strontium Dog film could work if they based it on Portrait of Mutant which was Johnny Alpha's origin story.

SD or even Rogue Trooper could both work if they were made as British films directed by the likes of Neil Marshall

I quite liked the Stallone film. I could have done without Rob Schnider though. I didn't even mind him taking off his helmet as it always struck me as odd that he never did in the comics, even being shown in bed with it on.

Am I right in thinking that early on, the reason why he never took it off was that he was extremely ugly?

In an very early story Dredd took off his helmet but we only saw the back of his head. The criminals who saw his face said something like "Something that ugly shouldn't be allowed to live" so he may have been disfigured. That has been ignored ever since though

In my humble opinion - Judge Dredd is the greatest comic strip of all time. And one of the greatest characters in literature PERIOD. The golden era of Dredd -1977 - 1990 is amazing. No way will this film ever capture the magic of that. To do Dredd 'justice' on the big screen you need a huge budget. 200 million dollars!

And Karl Urban looks nothing like Dredd. Chin? What chin? LOL

Matthew Fox from tv show Lost totally nailed Dredd in the film Speed Racer. And has the chin too!

Thee new film may be entertaining but it will never be the definitive Dredd film. Wrong story - I've read the leaked screenplay - it's more Die Hard than Judge Dredd - wrong budget (or rather, too small) and John Wagner should have written the screenplay too! A proper big budget Dredd film could have been incredible. Done properly, Judge Dredd is the one hero that would wow the movie world. He is the law, creep! There is no hero quite like Dredd. He's the ultimate anti-hero, the ultimate tough guy.

He was undercover without his helmet (obviously) in an early story with a different face too (Mega City One plastic surgery is great). Later on he was definitely disfigured during the Dead Man(?) series. I stopped reading around then.

Pat Mills once said the reason Dredd's face was never shown was simply because he was supposed to represent the system, a faceless authority which couldn't be reasoned with. I think Wagner said a similar thing in an interview, once. Show Dredd's face and you have to start seeing him as a human being, which he basically isn't-he is the Law.

I started buying in back in '84 and I've kept all the issues and bought quite a few back issues over the years

Danny Cannon had precious little control over the film and it’s more true to say it is Stallone’s vision rather than anyone else’s. He had a seperate editing suite and a team of editors who would cut footage together independently of Cannon who never stood a chance.

It stands as an interesting failure with an awesome trailer. I have an unused copy of the massive billboard poster in case anyone has a 40x20ft wall going spare. Sensible offers only!
