This is upto the developers of the apps, and not apple. With android growing at a fast rate, developers will produce apps for both platforms.

There will always be 'crap' apps in both market places. There is no getting around that fact. The good thing is, since there will be more than one app that does the same thing, the best will survive, whilst the dross wont. I always check reviews and the number of people that have left a comment.

I do hope so. For a while now, the 'big' brands seem to focus on getting an Apple app out first; I don't know if its easier to develop, considered to have more market share in their target demographic, or just considered 'cool' to have on the iPhone....

Yep, the apple version do seem to come out first.

However with android now the biggest player in the smartphone market, I think this will change. It wont be long, before we see android apps released before the apple version. From a business point of view it makes sense to do this, your app will reach the greater number of people.

Your 'hobby' programmer might not, but someone in it to make money will certainly do so.

You'd need to actually start making serious money out of Android apps before that happens and for the time being it doesnt look like it.

I think its been said devs make more from Android apps than they do Apple. Certainly true for the Angry birds devs which is amusing considering its free on android yet apple charge for it!

Same with Whatsapp.

Android is the bigger platform, but it is a lot easier for devs to make money from IOS than it is Android. Google have made changes to their systems over the last few months like bringing in app purchases and things are improving for Android.

With few apps making real money its quite likely a majority of IOS developers lose money considering it's a pay pay pay platform.
The other thing is that you can spend ages developing an Apple app and get rejected or even ejected from the app store.

Each has its drawbacks. Most of the income of course goes to a lucky few.

A recent article on The Register seems to say the opposite:
Android-based smartphones may have passed the iPhone in terms of market share, but developers of Android apps aren't profiting from that rise.

Isn't ITV Player meant to be on its way? Has a date been set for this?

That article doesnt even look at in-app advertising. Something that brings in quite a bit of money for android developers.

As the article alluded to, Google has now started to have to have top free, top paid etc lists which will bring apps to the users attention. Google market is not as good as the appstore, but it is improving. Its still very new so you can expect changes, updates and tweaks to improve it over time. I personally still use Appbrain, with the market occasionally.

With the Android tablet market growing, you can expect more app purchases/downloads. I thin the story for android apps in 12 months time will be very different from what it is today.

I'm about to release a small game on Android which I have ported over from iOS.

I would say Android is more of a pain to make a game playable over different handsets ( more a problem handling different aspect ratios in my case )

As for the language I prefer java over object c ( probably most developers do ) but its easier to get good graphics performance on the iPhone because you are compiling to native code.

The other issue I think developers have a problem with on Android is that there just isn't a culture of buying software, which there is on iPhone. Android apps are much easier to pirate as well which may be the main reason the big developers still concentrate on iOS

Since there is one or two devices for apples, then developing is a lot easier. With Android there are a plethora of devices which always make it more difficult. Although the API released by google will overcome some of these hurdles.

I would have thought this would be offset by the way apple moderate their appstore. If they say your not coming in, then thats the end of the matter. This could mean a lot of wasted time by the developer. Also they can remove your app from the appstore, without notice or reason.

You can get hold of pirated apps for iphones as well If your phone is jailbroken, then its just as easy downloading a pirated app as it is donwloading from the appstore.

I have an Ipod Touch 4 and a Samsung GS2 phone and had an HTC hero before that, yet I've only bought two apps on Android (BeyondPod, Modern Combat 2), while I've probably bought 50 plus apps on IOS. The difference is due to my lack of confidence in the security of the Android Market. From what I read that deleting your credit card info from google once you put it on is very difficult. So my two purchases used Paypal and Samsungs game hub.

My weariness comes more from Google rather than Android

Let's all just pretend that Google apps work better on IOS and that the dozens of IOS banned apps are just miniscule and pointless.

My personal big apps are simply 'useful ones'.
