Which iPod to buy... Help Please!
CrayonSocks

Right. I've decided that I'm going to buy an iPod Touch (Finally!)

BUT I'm facing a dilema. This is a rather hefty purchase for me to make.

I currently own an 4GB iPod 2nd Gen Nano, which is full. I need to decide between buying 8GB or 32GB.
I'm swaying towards 32GB as I feel that this iPod will last me a LONGG time with all the apps, music and stuff that will be put on it over time

However, the new fancy iTouch is going to be £249 (eek) which is a lot of money for me to spend on one item
Of course I'd prefer the newer 4g iPod, but if it's going to save me some cash, would I be better off buying the 3rd gen? Are they pretty similar or is one better than the other?

Your opinions please! Thanks in advance!

8 gig will fill up in no time if it helps and I'm quite happy with the one I've got - the new one brings nothing that's a "must have" for me, facetime is pointless as I can do that on my phone and you'll need a wi-fi connection to use it anyway which isn't always available.

Agreed about the inclusion of factime but you missed the retina display and faster processor. I think these make it worthy of upgrading if you want to use it for playing games. Developers are now targeting there apps at the iPhone 4 with it's retina display and faster processor, the 3rd gen iPod touch will soon feel old and slow like the iPhone 3G when faced with these new apps.

get the new one 32GB, 8GB is useless and you have video recording 720p which you will enjoy. Only thing I dont get is why the left out GPS that would have been killer.

Doesn't the iPhone GPS rely on mobile phone network access to get reasonable location accuracy? If so... need I say more?

It is already perilously close to the iPhone as it is-- include a GPS receiver (and digital compass) and about the only other feature you're missing on the iTouch 4G is a decent camera (the front camera is apparently 640x480, and the rear camera seems to be no more than 1MP resolution).

In fact pair up the iTouch 4G with a MiFi device and VoIP app and you've near enough got a phone anyway. If they add too much to the iTouch, there would be no reason to buy the much more expensive iPhone.

how do you think standalone GPS units work? iPhone uses A-GPS to get a quicker fix but GPS will do just fine.

GPS is great in the outdoors and can provide a very accurate fix anywhere quite quickly.

In urban areas, especially cities with lots of tall buildings, GPS isn't so good as the device cannot "see" as many satellites, and the assisted part of A-GPS is usually much better at getting a fix rapidly. Standard GPS only units will still get a fix once they've found enough satellites, but it can take a little time, especially if they haven't been used for a while.

As such, I've found my iPod touch combined with my MiFi is superb at providing a near instant location fix almost everywhere I use it, as they are populated areas with plenty of WiFi networks nearby. It would be useless in the countryside, but in towns and cities, you don't need a GPS receiver for navigation.
