and by most influential I dont nessesarily mean the "best" you don't even have to like them, just wondering what artists/bands inspired or can be traced back from the music you like in this modern age.

MADONNA! for me all the way, millions of fans, breaking records and exceptional studio albums, video's,tours and much more! she's th definition of an icon and an idol, a very inspiring woman
her image, her strength, beauty, courage and musical direction and that crisp sound with her voice, Madonna is just wow for me, the reason why she is The Queen Of Pop but so,SO much more than that!

Also i love Marvin Gaye,Kate Bush and Bjork

Madonna is definitely influential, but of all time? Perhaps she's the most influential female solo act, I'll give you that.

I think it's going to be one of the big bands like the Beatles. I think the Beatles are very overrated but I can see their influences all over the place.

I don't like him but I would say Elvis.

Without him there wouldn't have been The Beatles.
Up until Elvia along with other rockers from the 50's music was very middle of the road. The charts were full of Doris Day, Bing Crosby, Sinatra etc.

Joe Meek possibly for paving the way in synth/sample based music and the like.

Freddie Mercury

Not only a great singer, but the man had so much charisma, talent and class that the 'musicians' now a days can only dream of

Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker

yes, they were hugely influential to some good bands like Joy Division and then a whole era of shite electro also, can anyone listen to a whole Kraftwerk album without smashing their head against a wall?

the question posed was whos YOUR most influencial artist of all time, not the most influencial... so citing awards, record sales, etc isnt exactly a personal thing to you!

ultimately mine would be johnny rotten....

Wow not one person has put lady gaga
They are listing her up with Madonna in terms of success but when it comes to influential, people in their right mind decide not to include her because it's too soon.

For me it's Madonna and Michael jackson. Not a fan if Michael jackson but he is very influential and i think along with Madonna, they are just pure timeless pop legend. Would of loved for them to have collaborated.

It is too soon... and imo her music isn't original or revolutionary enough to be considered influential. Her success and persona is influential in the fact that people want to aspire to that level of success and she's the artist that success is measured against right now but if we're just looking at the music its basically the same type of music alot of other artists were making before her, whether its better or worse is a matter of opinion but its not influential.

Bowie and Morrissey are probably the most influential artists to me. I 'connect' (I know I know, cliche) with their music tremendously, and really feel a sense of understanding between myself and their musical output.

some interesting choices.. gotta be Joy Division for me, not my favourite band of all time (although they come close) but they've probably been the biggest influence to some of the modern bands I listen to now.

Quite hard to pin this down to one artist as different artists have been influencial on different styles of music that I like.

But to name a few of the main ones - probably - Tom Waits, Depeche Mode, Pixies.

For me, it has to be Bob Dylan, he opened the door to intelligent literacy in music and explored so many avenues, rock, folk, country that many bands followed individually.

But there are many others -

The Beatles - the creative force of the sixties.
The Kinks - where would Britpop have been without them.
Bowie - his chameleon personas opened up the seventies.
Roxy Music - took glam to an intelligent and sublime level (listen to Mother of Pearl).
Sex Pistols (reluctantly) - a manufactured band like the Monkees but opened up a new musical scene. More hype than talent but, latterly, sold a lot of Butter.
Kraftwerk - opened up the whole electronica scene but still the best.
Can - hugely influential on many scenes (even Josh Homme acknowledges them)
Queens of the Stone Age - took metal to another level.
Jay-Z - took rap out of the Ghetto and performed a masterly set at Glastonbury.
Cream/Led Zep - superb musianship that brought the Blues to a whole new audience.

MY vote still goes to Dylan but no one figure dominates - music is a broad church.

Oh wow I completely forgot about Dylan... So yeah he'd be one of mine too

I wouldn't class Queens as metal though...

The Velvet Underground influenced a lot of music that I like, although I don't listen to them that often.

Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath essentially laid the blue print for hard-rock and heavy-metal so I'd say them.
