Any provider, because you can easily search the Internet in order to find a standard rate alternative for an 0845 or 0870 number.

I have an app on my iPhone for finding them too.

So, it really shouldn't matter who you are with as you can usually call a number that will come out of your minutes.

Vodafone do this

Include 0800, 0845 and 0870 numbers
only £2.50 per month
I think its 100 minutes but not 100% certain.

T-Mobile do this bundle
To choose the 08 number calling booster, text SSER to 879, call 150 from your mobile, visit one of our stores or go to www.t-mobile.co.uk. You'll have to be on a selected pay monthly plan (including current plans for new customers) to get it. The booster costs £2.50 a month and the cost will be added to your next bill and then every bill each month until you ask us to remove it. We'll send you a text to let you know when your booster is ready to use and you can ask us to remove your booster, simply call 150 from your mobile. Your booster gives you 30 minutes of calls from your phone in the UK to all numbers in the UK starting 0800, 0808, 0870, 0871, 0872, 0843, 0844 and 0845. Once you've bought a booster, the minutes that you use to call numbers starting 08 will come out of your booster rather than your inclusive allowance

Thanks everyone.

I do go to Saynoto0870 to find alternatives to 0845 and 0870 but sometimes there isn't an alternative regular no.

I looked on ASDA mobile as I sometimes use them on one of mobiles. They do 8p per min to all networks but I couldn't see their 0845 and 0870 tariff.

It's usually the council that I need 0845 for. They used to be a regular no...... they should have left it that way.

It does matter, because there are now many 08xx numbers which have no equivalent geographical number.

Very few.

For 0800 you use 0800 buster and for the others you call head office on the geographical number and ask to be put through.

Using that and saynoto0870 I've not had to call one of those rip off numbers for years. Alternatively email them or write!

Another thing I do is bear it in mind when signing up to companies - is there customer service free or geographical, if it's 0870 I won't go with them unless I'm making a worthwhile saving over the nearest competitor.

I'm not paying £30 a year unnecessarily.

I've solved the 0800 nos as I have a giffgaff SIM so it's free to call 0800.

I used to have to go to a phonebox as it was 25p per min on my other mobile.

No you just needed to call 0800 buster then dial the 0800 number you needed, it's completely free. You don't need to go to the phone box or switch to a network with no customer services and poor 3g coverage.

Here's the call costs for the different networks:

O2 Vodafone Orange T-Mobile 3 UK 0800Buster

20p..... 20p..... 15p..... 10p..... 15p..... Free*

Not very few,

Companies and organisations have grown wise to the georgraphical number alternative, they have programmed their phone systems so that the operator can't transfer your call to the correct department. You have to call the 08xx number. Even some government departments are doing this and it has been raised in parliament. Apparently, the government feel that more people benefit from this than are inconvenienced. Which just shows how out of touch they are.

what's annoying is that the company that owns an 0845 only make 1 or 2p a minute out of it but you end up paying like 35p

Yes I do understand that I can use 0800 buster but as I have a giffgaff SIM as well as others i.e. 02, Virgin,ASDA on my other PAYG mobiles it is handy to use giffgaff for free 0800 calls.

It's really just 0845 and 0870 that can sometimes be harder to find a cheap way of calling or an alternative no from a mobile.

The info on this thread has been useful to me though.

I think they should simplify numbers and prices as there are so many variations.

From what I've read even if you start 0845 the next few numbers can affect the price charged.

You can't just say oh 0845 so they charge x p per min you have to know the rest of the number as well.

And even if you can find a cheap rate if you are kept waiting in a queue for a very long time it can still add up.

T-Mobile have started clamping down on allowing you to do this. I used to call an 020 number and then followed on with the 0800 one. Calling that particular 020 landline number is now chargeable!

When I've done it calling the 0800 buster no say 020********** is chargeable per min but you might be able to use your inclusive minutes , but the bit from the buster no to the 0800 no is free.

So yes you are paying per min to call the 0800 buster no.

So if I phone the 0800 no I want via the buster no even if it was 5p per min that's better than calling the 0800 no direct which could be 25p per min from a mobile.

Yeah it's pretty good, particularly for 0844.

As for Asda Mobile, looks like this page on the Asda site has a link to a pop up for 08 number charges; http://www.asdamobile.com/compare_tariffs.html

Thanks....... 8p is OK as long as you aren't kept in line waiting for too long.
