I have just purchased Humax Freeview HD DTR Box. Very good. Easy set up, perfect performance. However,I have probs setting up access to Pics,Music and Vids. As far as I can see, I have done the necessary to create a network on my XP computer, but accessing is a nightmare.Usually get " No server has been found" but when I do connect,then pics seem OK, Music brings up folders and contents which will not play and for video, I can access folders but no contents shown.Clicks always take me back to empty Upper Folder. Have twice E Mailed Support with no answer whatsoever. Think they must have left home!

Anyone else with this problem? Any guidance?
I guess a slow internet connection at 2mb may cause erratic access ( due to inc to 8bb shortly) but as to the rest??

Videos have been compiled using MPEG2 (Roxio) and music is either MP3 or WAV. Help please!!

not sure if this helps but the way I can see the music, videos and pictures is to add them to my Windows Media Player Library. Can see them all and play well..

Hi Redbally01. Thanks for your reply. I am already using WMP11 as the library medium. I have now had some success with Pics and Vids but Music still steadfastly refuses to utter a sound. Must be a reason for this. I think I have also concluded that the log on failures are due to my sluggish Internet link.

Not sure what issue there could be with your set-up, I've got the ethernet linked into my router and can see all pictures, videos and music from the WMP library, I had to remember to share all the relevent folders on the homegroup network and they all play fine. sound great through my amplifier. I am using Windows 7 if that makes a difference.

I'm using Windows XP and usually have success in showing videos from Windows Media Player, but music can be hit and miss. I also need to switch off my Firewall or else the server does not seem to be picked up. Videos generally play well, but sometimes stop and a lost connection message appears.

So I have my HDR T2 connected to my macbook via ethernet as my laptop is next to my tv and thats not on the same floor as the router. Before I got the wireless adapter for my xbox I was doing the same setup and using my macbook as a bridge which worked well but the T2 is saying network disconnected. It is showing up all the settings from the network apart from gateway address. On my mac its saying the "ethernet has a self assigned IP so an internet connection will not be possible".

Will it be possible to fix this problem?

It's puzzling.When I connect my Sony Blueray which also has a PC link, then I can pick up everything. The only hitch is that my home videos do not play smoothly and music is dis jointed.But not the "My Music "files. However, I see that the B.Ray manual says that one needs at least a 2.5MB connection for good picture and sound streaming. I am struggling to get 2MB at the present so I think that may have a lot to do with it?

What speed connection can you achieve from your IP? Are you better than my 2mb? I wonder if you have the same streaming problem as me because of slow streaming speed.

This may be a dumb question but isn't the streaming of media (via a router) from files on your PC to the HDR FOX T2 independent of what speed you get from your ISP? After all, your'e not getting the media files from the internet. However, please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Well Paul, that does seem a sensible argument to me too, but I have a Sony Blue Ray which also streams PC media to TV and they have said that poor video reproduction is probably down to a too slow internet speed and hence buffering problems. They recomment no less than 2.5MB.

So I don't quite know what to believe on this one!

You are right, the internet speed has nothing to do the internal network speed between your pc and blue-ray player. The 2.5mbps they recommend will be for YouTube/Iplayer etc usage where you are streaming over the internet.

Your internal network will probably be 10 times the speed of your internet connection although this will depend on a number of factors.

For streaming speed, ethernet connection is better than homeplugs is better than wi-fi but again there are no constants here and results will differ depending on setup.

Following receipt of guidance notes from Humax support yesterday, I re-established my network as they recommend, but I still cannot open any files and after one initial log on, the box refused to find the server for the rest of the day.Attempts to open a folder result in bringing back the PC Admin User icon.
I have a Sony Blue Ray which is streaming fine(apart from poor Video) so I am beginning to think that I have an issue with the box itself. Currently awaiting Humax' further thoughts on the matter.

It is probably unlikely to be a problem with the box (other than software bug) or the speed of the network. Most likely is the configuration of the product you are using to stream (I'm guessing Windows Media Player). You could try using different software such as Tversity.

I am using WMP11 as I have always done.

If it streams to my BlueRay Ok, then surely it should do the same for Humax??

However, I may try the alternative software as you suggest.

Bit of a grey area unfortunately, there is not 100% compatibility between any DNLA products from what I understand so it's not as simple as that. I believe it should work with WMP11 though so it may just need some options tweaking. If you have not used hummy.org.uk have a look there someone who has used it may be able to help.

I think you are more than likely correct in that assumption. I did download Tversity but all it did was to replicate the same problem. I am just reading their troubleshooting guide now, but quite frankly, it is all beyond a 67 year old non techno like me!. I don't think I can be bothered with it any more. I can now get Freeview HD and dual recording facilities which was my reason for buying the box in the first place. Networking would have been a nice bonus. I think Humax are the people who must come up with some explanation as to why the PVR does not do "what it says on the tin"

I think you are likely right in this assumption. I downloaded TVersity but all it did was to replicate the same issue. I am just reading their troubleshooting notes but frankly it is all beyond me. As a 67 yr old non techno, I am not sure I can be bothered with it any more.
I feel it is a Humax responsibility to tell me why their PVR does not do "what it says on the tin", for whatever reason. I think there needs to be far more guidance given in their manual on networking and connectivity topic. Not everyone is a computer whizz!

Unfortunately, Humax do not supply the 12 year old.


The problem is not (altogether) Humax's fault as different operating systems - and different versions of Windows - have different procedures for setting up their network sharing. Mind you while their boxes may be pretty good, the manuals are abysmal. I have an HD and there they do not even tell you the parameters of the one video format they claim to support.

I have a number of .avi files that come up as "not supported" even when they are seen on the network. If they pruned everything like the list of codes for problems with your satellite dish, they would have room for the handbook to give some decent guidance.

Well, I am somewhat older than 12 years but thankfully not totally stupid!
I believe that I have done all that is necessary to set up a network. Had I not, then I would not be able to achieve streaming with my Sony Blueray.As it is, Blueray works OK The fact that I cannot get the Humax to do the same, leads me to suppose that it may be a box fault.
Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I don't see what other conclusion can be drawn.
The User manual could be more helpful on the whole topic which ay least I think you agree with.

Open WMP11 and then choose "Tools-Options-Library"

Click on "Configure sharing".

Is the Humax listed as a device?

Normally new devices aren't automatically connected and shared. You have to allow it to share with the Humax. As you already have your Blu-ray player shared the Humax will need to be setup with the WMP11 server.

Also try removing the blu-ray player from the list so the Humax is just there. Does it work ok then?

Prontopro is spot on. Devices must be enabled for sharing. The method varies by OS.

Wireless routers can sometimes stop the streaming from working - they block the multicast messages from the wireless LAN. PC firewalls can also block the necessary ports by default - disable the FW to check.

TVersity is useful if the box has limited codec support as it has transcoding capability, but you may need to add a profile for the Humax.

Hi, anyone got this to work on the Mac OSX 10.6 I've bought the ethernet plugs but can't find any information about setting up the media streaming on the Humax..

Both Humax and Sony are shown as set up for Media Sharing. Removed both devices at diff times.Blueray fired up first time,but refused to do so again.No response from Humax at all. Tried both devices independantly and with my Norton FW switched both off and on.
Clearly connecting to server is only spasmodic for some reason which has yet to be identified

Disabling Norton FW made no difference,
Managed to get BlueR to fire up but refused to do so again.
No joy with Humax at all.

Can the problem lie with my Thomson Speedtouch W.Router? Should I be talking now to my IP (TalkTalk)

I see that you have Norton firewall. Can I ask if you have your Windows firewall disabled?
