I personally think your problem lies with the implementation of the DLNA protocol in the Humax.

I notice that no Humax models are DLNA certified (http://www.dlna.org/products/) so if the software in the machine is non-compliant for DLNA then it may well be hit and miss whether it works or not. (It could also be that they just haven't got the certification yet - Humax would have to tell you that)

My last suggestion is for you to try an alternative DLNA media server to WMP11. I use Mezzmo as a media server on my pc. It's fully uPnP/DLNA compliant and may work for you where WMP11 doesn't. It performs for me without any issues whatsoever. You can download a fully functional trial product for free from the Conceiva website



Other than that I'd keep on with Humax technical support and try and get them to resolve it.

Thanks for your constructive comments. Humax are currently asking me to log into my router to see if the PVR is connected. They have lost me on this. The router as a piece of hardware does not seem to figure on my PC,unlike the Belkin USB adapter. Should I be looking in some obscure area for this info?

Perhaps I should try your alternative server. Forgive my ignorance but does this work with WMP or instead of. Will I need to tweak any settings. I did try Tversity on someone elses suggestion, but it made no difference.I assume that is a like product to that which you suggest?

I've got WMP12 (via a Windows 7 PC) and a Maxtor Shared Storage II (NAS drive) both setup on our home network as DLNA servers and the Humax has no problems communicating and streaming audio and video from either of them.

Can't be much help other than it just seemed to work with no hassle at all. Could have just been luck though. I also have a Panasonic TV which has DLNA capabilities and that works fine as well.

As you have DHCP enabled on your Humax if you bring up it's menu and look at the network settings has the humax got an IP address and does it show a DNS IP address?

If it does then it's connected to the router as only the router gives out this information.

You will have to look in your router manual to see how to access the logon screen. For my netgear router I type in http://192.168.0.1 into my browser and hit enter.

A popup will appear asking for a username and password. Once these are entered you will go onto a setup screen where you can look and change all the router's settings.

Your Speedtouch may or may not be similar. Only your manual will tell you.

When trying other media servers I found that having several installed would cock up the DLNA streaming. I always removed one before installing another to try.

As for Mezzmo I have this running alongside WMP11 but I don't use WMP11 anymore as I found it couldn't stream the simplest mpg video file. It was ok for pics and mp3's but video was rubbish.

This AM I cleared everything from my PC. Existing NW setup, WMP11 and reinstalled. Set up Humax first. Immediately fired up, played pictures but nothing else. Came out. Have not been able to log back in since! Similarly with Sony BRay.
In Humax, Network settings show following:
Config .IP: DHCP.
IP Add 192.168.1.71
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway Add: 192.168.1.254
DNS Add: 192.168.1.254

I was never given a manual for Router when installed by Talktalk. But following your hint, have brought up on browser.
Masses of info,but essentially shows my Humax and Sony connections to ethernet ports 1&2.Is there another critical setting that I should check?

When trying other Media servers, I did disable WMP. Have cleared these out now.

Your DNS IP addresses are showing a local network address which is the same as the gateway address. The gateway address is the IP address of your router. The DNS IP address should be totally different. For example my DNS server address is 208.67.222.222 which as you can see is nothing like my local network address for my router of 192.168.0.1

If you log back into your router you will see the DNS address that the router uses. This is the one that should be in the DNS entry on the Humax. I would manually change that.

Also whilst you're in the setup screen for your router look for uPNP setup and confirm that it is switched ON. Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) helps devices, such as the Humax, Blu-ray player and computers, access the network and connect to each other as needed.

Some things for you to try out.

This has solved nothing I am afraid.
Can I say that both the Humax and B/Ray carry the same DNS of 192.168.1.254. There is no facility to change it on the B/Ray.
As you suggested, in Humax, I went into manual from DHCP and changed the DNS to 212.139.132.26. I then got a log on but could not repeat it later. If you return the settings from Manual to DHCP, it returns the DNS to where it was.
Can I be sure we are talking the same language here.

In the Router, the only addresses I can find are in the Broadband Connection area.
This gives an IP address of 79.77.167.229
Primary DNS 212.139.132.26
Secondary DNS 212.139.132.25
What is this primary/secondary business? Am I using the right figures?

I don't really understand why the addresses you refer to need to be different when they are what was in the systems without any prior changing by me. The Gateway and DNS is also the same in the Blue Ray. This is all just so confusing.

We are. I personally don't understand why it decides to put a DNS server address as the gateway address. That doesn't make sense to me at all.

I don't think we're going to get it working for you without a lot of assistance from Humax. It shouldn't be this difficult for you for a supposedly compliant DLNA device.

I agree. I think Humax should come up with a solution for this. Surely I am not the only person to have had this problem. (Mind you, knowing me, I probably am!!)

I have also registered the problem with TalkTalk because they can access my router to check all the settings. I am still puzzled as to why Internet connectivity is showing as failed after testing, when it works fine. I hate technology sometimes!!

Anyway, as I have said before, I am grateful to you for all your help and imput. I will let you know when and if this gets solved, and the causes.

I once had a D-link router which a HP laser printer just wouldn't work reliably with. I finally swapped in another router and all was fine.

Just occasionally you do get harware incompatability. If you have another router handy, try swapping it in (without the internet side connected, so that its just working as a switch). May also be worth swapping the network cables around a bit too.

Its a long shot, but it just might work!

BTW, I have just used my Sony Bluray player to view photos off WMP11. Worked fine with my wifes photos, but not those taken with my Nikon SLR camera. Thumbnails OK, but the pictures themselves come across a band of corrupt lines. My brand new Humax Freeview HD recorder, shows the folders but nothing in them The joys of emerging tech eh? (but iplayer on the Sony is fab).

Hi. Unfortunately I do not have a spare Router. Earlier,I was able to log in to Server immediately.Came out and tried again. No such luck! I also find that folders that have come up on Humax won't open. It is difficult to know if this is a Humax issue, or a router one. If there was incompatability, I would not expect to ever achieve a log on??

I agree.The Sony BlueRay is brilliant for streaming Iplayer,UTube etc. And it works every time. I wonder if the promised TV Portal on Humax will as well?

Well.I am not given to excessive optimism recently, but I think I may have solved my problems.
How, you will ask? That's a good question!!
This evening, I have spent a lot of time looking into my Thomson Speedtouch W/Less Router. It concerned me that a connectivity test was showing a fail with DNS Servers. I felt this had to be a problem. The Internet however was working fine.
I completely removed the program,and set up again. No change. I then did a reset of the software and ticked a box for both devices about using the same IP all the time.
A further log on attempt worked, and in quick time.All files opened although Video play back is poor. Shut down Humax, fired up again immediate network. Did this three times. Sony BlueRay is doing the same. Switched off PC and restarted.No problem.

So this is one of those issues which has been cured by a lot of fiddling. I felt that everything was pointing to the Router Modem. Thomson support is crap. It is just not there. I am sure that there must be another firmware update but the website for updates does not connect. I also feel that the connectivity issue needs resolving, but so far no guidance found.Downloaded manual which was no help at all.
Anyway,I shall wait until tomorrow before trying again,hoping that tonights success is not down to some other quirk!

The Thomson routers on O2 do that as well. It's acting as a DNS relay. A lot of O2 users have had problems with DNS failing. It's usually necessary to re-start the router, but many users have bypassed the router by configuring manual DNS in their PC network settings.

Well done you. So fixing IP address appears to solve the connection problem. I'll remember that.

Poor video streaming might be due to your CPU and how old it is. Whilst streaming, what sort of CPU usage do you get if you look under task manager?
