Right I know some people don't like the Ipad BUT I'm asking for a mate who is interested in one, namley to read books on. What I want to know is are the books expensive and is there somewhere online where you can browse titles and prices. Many Thanks

I think you have also Amazon's Kindle app on it, so you can buy books from amazon, too.

The kindle app is great and the kindle store has loads of books for free.

iBooks is 'prettier' but kindle is almost as good, and let's face it books don't need to be pretty unless you are a child, and the books are way cheaper and there are more titles.

Personally I prefer reading on the iPhone, as it is easier to hold, and the screen is perfect even in bright sunshine.

I use my iPad mainly to surf the net.

So, for someone who mainly wants to read books would you recommend the Kindle?

If they want to read outside, and really only want it for reading, definitely. I have the ipad and it is not good for outdoor use, plus the battery life isn't great for reading (I can't use white on black text). I love it, but I think I'm going to get a Kindle as well.

Yes, if you read books a lot, the new Kindle 3 is a better choice than an ipad. There are also Sony and other readers, but having used Sony, too, I think you get better deal with the Kindle. It's black & white, but that should not be a problem for somebody who wants to read books. The 6'' version is also very easy to carry around.

Only for books. The internet on it and pdf files are in black and white, so buying magazines is off putting.

I agree with Ivan if all you want to do is reading then dedicated ereader is the best option. I think the kindle 3 offers the best value for money out of all the devices on the Market.

Prices can be nearly the same as the book.

For example Blair's 'The Journey'...Hardback- £12.50, Kindle- £6.99, iBooks- n/a.

"Full Circle" by Ellen McCarthy. Hardback £13, Kindle- n/a, iBooks £12.99

The advantage of the iPad though is you can run the Kindle program on it so that's like having two devices. You need an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad with the iBooks app to browse prices of the iBooks.

If you have an iDevice, you might want to consider Stanza.
