What is 'Canon'
Sophie ~Oohie~
08-09-2010
I haven't got a clue, except it's always being mentioned and there seems to be a debate about it?
Any ideas?

While I'm here, what is 'emotional content' and 'regeneration limit'? I mean I know what they are, but I don't understand why the debate/problem with them?

(Disclaimer: This Is A Joke)

I think it's basically the ground rules for any storyline that is followed in successive plots / series spinoffs etc. As not to contradict itself

Yes, point well taken.

This forum should have an 'anchored' FAQ thread for certain questions that keep innocently coming up and then starting up old fights again...

Or even not so innocently

"Canon" is a purely subjective matter - as far as I understand it, all the spin-off stories, novels, audio plays etc. do adhere to the continuity of the TV series and therefore are considered "Canon" by those who have read/listened to them...for those who have not, the TV episodes only are "Canon" for obvious reasons...I'm pretty sure that the only 100% agreement on the issue is that the Peter Cushing movies sit outside either "Canon" as they depict a batty scientist who has built a time machine, rather than a Time Lord travelling Time and Space.

I think that's about it...unless, of course, you know different

Not to be mistaken with a Canon who make Cameras,Cannon which is a big thing that fires Cannonballs or Tommy Cannon, comedic partner to Bobby Ball

"What is canon?" boils down to "What is real Doctor Who?".

The lines are increasingly blurred in recent years by SJA, Torchwood, online red-button stuff, etc, but it's always been a hotly debated topic.

Do books/audios/comic strips/ 1960s ice lolly wrappers count? Frankly, i don't have the energy for the debate, as it will never be solved and always turn into argybargy.

Canon is every Doctor Who story you watch plus all the in-jokes you don't get.

Tommy Cannon is not Canon, or indeed Cannon. His real name is Tom Derbyshire.

In Demon Quest, the fourth doctor lives in a cottage in Sussex, has a housekeeper/companion called Mrs Wibbsey and now has a
Spoiler
pet elephant

And it's released by the BBC, so it must be canon.

What? The animal has been released by the BBC - should be a little bit more careful.

.....in answer to the other question re: 'Regeneration Limit', I believe it's when the Doctor says "That's it! I've f*****g had enough of all this - I'm off!!"

Canon is the logical and orderly progression of events within the stories timeline.

Which is a ridiculous concept when you're dealing with a time travelling madman in a box.
